I just stumbled across this thread and I’m glad I did.

Our w164 has had the same issue for years and we’ve never managed to get to the bottom of it.

It did get really bad at one point - we had dash warnings and it went into some sort of uber-limp mode - wouldn’t go above 20 mph.

Took it to a local indy who put a new turbo actuator on it, cleared the codes and it went back to normal - although still with the same ‘give it some beans and it’ll go into limp until you can restart the engine’ issue.

Anyway, prompted by this thread - I’ve just been out and had a look at the red seal and sure enough, its knackered.

I’ve ordered a new one from eBay for £14 and I’m got my fingers crossed this is the end of it!

+1 to discovering the red seal broken. I took it apart in order to do an air filter change after buying the car (full MBSH). With the way it was folded over I don't think it can have happened any other way than by clumsy reassembly. Poor design or not, I bought a new seal and haven't yet suffered any symptoms.

Also this seal will let oil drip down onto the inlet port shut off motor and bugger it up, I have just done one and found this web page very very helpful.
