Hi all - I own a black J Reg Mercedes 300CE-24 Sportline Auto Petrol which has been sitting on my drive for a couple of years and only been driven a handful of times. I was hoping to get it back on the road, insured and taxed, MOT'd etc, but I just haven't had the time and my wife has been nagging me to sell it. I've finally given in and have started to look at the options.

It's not taxed, insured, MOTd etc, and I'd rather not spend money to do this, but to sell it as it is. There was a mechanical fault when I drove it last where it conked out after going a few miles and warm, and needed to wait for it to cool down before it would start. So clearly something needs attention. Obviously I would be up-front about this to whoever would buy it.

Any advice on best way to sell this? I'm realistic about what it's worth without the MOT, tax and insurance and above problem. However, it is a beautiful car and I'd like it to go to a good home.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks

The cheapest failure that could be causing your car to cut out is the crank sensor. I'd change that and see if it works.

You might want to join mbclub.co.uk - quite a few enthusiasts over there.

does sound like a crank sensor to me- went on my SLK 32 ( common occurence as the part reaches the end of its life after about 10 years). Got it fixed under Mobilo warranty- the sensor itself was £100 exactly (fitting was a simple job and took the guy 10 minutes).
The MB guy also had one on the van which would suggest that the sensor was a standard fit for several models- would certainly be worth hooking up to a STAR machine and checking the error codes- would certainly make the car more saleable

I have a 300ce 24 valve sportline and have had it for several years. I have had that problem with starting and running then stalling, letting cool then it is o.k. I spent a lot of money with authorised Mercedes dealers who changed so many parts to no avail. In the end it was simple and relatively cheap.Because of the position of the distributor right at the front of the engine, moisture gets in and causes the problem, take the distributor off dry out the inside and no problem, also make sure you replace the rotor, do not let it wear down to far,if you live in a warm dry climate I do not think you will have any trouble, to me it is a design fault, but I love the car and provided you know what the problem is no problem, some people say one can spray the inside of the cap and inner area with silicone. I have taken her abroad with no problems.

It's the distributor cap and seal.

How much do you want for it? What's the condition otherwise like? Spec?

Maybe send me a PM.

Fabulous engine. I'm hankering after a 300-24 estate if anyone spots one. I've seen the lhd manual car, which does appeal, although seems to go up by £1000 every time I notice it.

I'd be interested to know the spec and condition, mileage etc. too.

PM if you like!
