sl r129 anyone taken the risk on a 3/4k car
Discussion
Never look at the classifieds after you've bought a car - one just like yours but cheaper will turn up. Looks decent value at anything up to the high estimate of hammer price of 9k (so about 10k after commish) to me.

Thanks for that........
I've been scanning the various www ads for months looking for a nice 500SL in either bright red or this blue rather than the usual silvers and blacks.
Had finally noticed a VERY dark blue one for sale more locally than the usual "tother end of the country" location. Was going to view it tonight but the dark nights, and the dark colour was concerning me and has made me delay.
The one up for auction is still a long way away and therefore I'm unlikely to view and buy it but it reminds me that I really want a brighter colour.

Mine is off up to North Yorkshire as soon as a window opens in the weather and my schedule so you can see it in the metal if you like. The auction one is mono-coloured which I don't like so much as two-tone, but if it can be snaffled for the lower end of the guide price then there's money for a repaint of the Saccos.
Slightly annoying there's no side view and no hardtop shot - wonder if it has horrid aftermarket wheels. Still wondering about buying it for the LOLs of a matching pair.

The very dark blue one is the Japanese import on for 8500 or so, isn't it? I was quite attracted to it - much higher mileage than most imports but that wouldn't put me off. I'd change that horrid speedo over though if possible - having been behind the wheel for a while now I just couldn't put up with anything other than the perfect clarity of the proper dials.

Get the 190E as tempted. Preferably the 2.6. Lovely in Pearl Blue.
This was mine but I found the 2.0 litre a bit slow. (This is a dealer photo)

Correct. The guy selling (Dealer)seems a genuinely decent sort of guy, from discussions on the phone.
The car sounds in good nick and not too bad on price, It's just that I hate black, silver, grey, as the car parks are full of dull boring colours. (Current cars are a Doom Blue Metallic Volvo which looks nice when polished but otherwise bores me, a bright yellow TVR and a red/ali Caterham).
Re Speedo in km/h, I ran an E30 M3 for a couple of years (LHD and Km/hr speedo. You just get used to it.
If there's anyone nearby to that Auction and would be able to give me an honest review of that car, I could be tempted to bid blind......
Cheers
If we're really talking identical twin pairs of J registration Pearl Blue over Grey leather Mercedes-Benz coupes then

Mind you, isn't 12k strong money for a car that has done 175k?!

Great looking car, but there is a two and a half year gap in the MOT history from 2011-2014, and it apparently hasn't been on the road since Oct 2015. It might all be fine but some careful digging in the history will be called for.
Surely it wouldn't have been clocked BACK to 175,000 miles though? What if a car with two MOTs three years apart at basically the same 175K milesage showing actually did 75,000 miles in those years? A car that has actually done 250K miles would be dead in the UK market (even though regular use with proper refurbishment and replacement is no barrier to a good quality car, as r129SL regularly proves with his cars). The interior looks a bit baggy on the advertised one and no-one would mistake it for a 100K mile car, but I can imagine that a 250K mile car of legendary quality and staying power, bought for next to nothing and wound back to 175K, could be a useful earner for an unscrupulous vendor.
However, that's a purely hypothetical musing and I was not suggesting that this car has, in fact, been clocked. In pursuing the history I would be more concerned to clarify the possibility of it having lain cold and dark in the open with moss growing over it for two and a half years. The UK market usually values low mileage over condition, possibly because so many people in the UK act as if proper maintenance is optional and that cars whould be thrown away when they reach 10 years or 150K miles, whichever is sooner. But cars being unused, unmaintained and uncared for in sub-optimal storage conditions is a much bigger problem than mileage.

Completely agree. Mind you - on the subject of moss - have you seen this thread? I suspect the purchase price was closer to three figures than five though.Edited by Lowtimer on Friday 11th November 09:30

Interesting that the blue one is guide price £7-9K whereas the red one albeit with lower miles is £12-13Khttp://www.classiccarauctions.co.uk/mercedes-benz-...
The red one and the silver SL320 also in that sale are being consigned by Turnbull and Oliver
http://www.usedmercedesbenz-sales.co.uk/mercedes-s...
seemingly as a stock clearance.
I thought quite hard about the red one over the last couple of months but the colour, the AMG wheels and the fact that it's a facelift car put me off... at the asking price of 18.5k (which dropped from an opening 19.5k). The provenance is good and if Prestige have properly prepared it for sale then it should be in fine fettle. Had I not found and bought my car recently I'd definitely be going to the auction with a 13.5k ceiling to see if I could snare a bargain and then think about a full respray into a more muted colour.
With a fair amount of R129 stock in that auction and with it being a chill dark December day that won't encourage the punters to splash out on convertible moneypits I think a brave and determined buyer might snatch a bargain here. Certainly that blue car shouldn't be going be much less than 8k IMHO, assuming there's no obvious or imminent Borkage.

I already have one, have less than no need for another but keep looking at this thinking I should buy it.

The red one
S'funny ol' world, each to their ownWhile I like the pearl blue and would happily buy one, the bright red is my favourite colour......
It's black, silver, grey that I cannot abide.
There's a grey one valued at a reasonable price at Mathewsons Auction in Thornton Le Dale , N Yorks. highish miles but grey, no sorry.
Wish I was nearer to Warwickshire I'd go and look at the blue one.
One thing about the auction price though is the buyer fees - 10% plus VAT so that's close to a grand on top of an £8000 purchase price and you don't get to try it or get a gut feeling about the vendor and the way they have treat the car.
If you *really* like the red one then an inspection and test drive is possible, since the car is still advertised with the dealer. I know it's the other end of the country but hey, you get to drive her all the way home again!
The seller has to pay 5% commission to the auction house and transport the car there, maybe close to a grand as the "cost of selling" all told, so perhaps they would consider an offer that was close to the top of the auction estimate... particularly if you offered to buy it as a trade sale, without the benefit of their warranty. Given the distance from Scotch Corner to Horndean that could be sensible for both sides. Prestige have a good reputation - my friend with the grey 500SL uses them and gave them full marks.
There's a similar car (1997, better spec, even lower miles) at a much higher price down South too.
