Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! I'm off in the morning to collect my new 1991 SL500! .....the only slightly worrying bit is, it's from south Wales! I've just seen on Sky News the weather report is warning of severe conditions and a red zone in.... The south of Wales! Brilliant, thank you Jesus frown

My first V8, red zone'ness and an already nervous dad in the passenger seat.... what could possibly go wrong tongue out

Pictures to follow of the journey and car smile Wish me luck....

Good luck! They're not too bad in the snow because you sit practically on the rear axle so there's a bit of extra weight over it.

Drove up to Scotland for Christmas and left SL in the garage on trickle charge for a few months - probably until May then I will bring it back down to London for the summer. Actually missing it!

I'm back!! What a journey! We set off from Rochester train station at 8am and we only got back tonight at 9.30pm! Knackered is not the word!

The car is a beauty though, I've already fallen for it smile its a 1991 metallic pearl grey example with 94k miles, the bottle top style wheels (I can't remember how many holes but the older style) unmarked grey leather, 90% Mercedes of Bath service history, lived in a garage doing less than 1000 miles in the last 6 years.

We had a few gremlins in the system during the journey... 20 minutes in the ASR light came on and stayed on. We pulled over and turned the car off and on (the universal way of fixing things) and the same thing happened again, 10-20 minutes in the light came on again. I pushed the snow chain button?? and that wouldn't light up so I don't know if they are related? The snow chain button light can be pushed in the first 10-20 minutes before the ASR light decides to come on and is fine. But as soon as the ASR light comes on, you can't do anything to the snow chain button?

15 miles from home after using the wipers for most of the journey, the wipers suddenly went very slowly and would struggle to cross the screen. Again we tried the universal fix of off and on and it sorted itself out? The wipers were back to full speed again??

I've had a quick look on google and it seems the wipers might be the motor maybe the fuse box? But the ASR problem I can't find anything about... hopefully a loose/damaged sensor?

It's all character though, I truly love this car already! It's a keeper smile

I'll try to get some pictures up tomorrow once I've had some sleep!!

.....actually have a bad camera phone picture tongue out

Great looking car.

The glitches stem from lack of use. The ASR light is possibly a bad ABS sensor or just dirt/corrosion on the ABS ring.

The wiper problem is pure lack of use. Possibly needs a new motor (not the end of the world price-wise), possibly just needs the links lubricating.

The car looks great. As you press it into use which it hasn't known for a while, little things will go wrong. The snow chain switch disables the ASR, I think, allowing wheels to spin and snow chains to cut.

Thank you kindly smile I've had some funny looks off the neighbours today washing the motorway crap off the car in -2 deg, I couldn't feel my hands afterwards and it won't last 2 minutes but I couldn't stand to see the SL dirty frown

Something new that's started though, is a noise behind the drivers seat that sounds like an electric motor turning every 10 seconds or so? It kind of sounds like a fuel pump? It's when the engine is running. I'm a little worried that left alone, whatever it is will burn itself out? The windows and central locking all work as that's what I thought it might be at first?

I don't know if I mentioned it before but ...... I LOVE this car!!

Could be the fuel pump, that is located on the underside (exterior) of the car, just ahead of the offside rear wheel. Or it could be the vacuum/central locking pump, which is located inside the car, behind the carpet wall in the offside rear of the passenger compartment. I can't think of anything else but no doubt there are other possibilities.

My ASR light came on due to lack of use (battery charge low).

The more I used my SL the better it got.

HI PAZ
very nice and like it. does yours have heated seats ? curious if these still work after being 22 yrs old? the 93 car we bought doesnt have heated seats.
Curious if it has ADS system? again ours doesnt have it although i read so many stories about the ADS damping system needing big repairs due to age etc.

a hectic day to pick it up in this weather!

Keep me posted on your ASR story, the same thing happens in our car. it sometimes doesnt come on but when it does, the car drives quite differently, basically you have to be heavier on the throttle to get the car to move so it seems to be linked in to the accelorator. Ive had it down to the mechanic and will be getting them to have a look. the previous owner did have a sensor replaced or fuse as Ive still got his invoice 2 yrs ago for this. clearly it hasnt solved it although my one had basically not been driven regularly in 5 years. My mechanic thought it could be a bad earth connection. if this is the case then it could be an easy and cheap fix.

Has your cars wiring loom been changed? Sounds like your wiring loom / eta wiring is failing.

My 1990 300-24 has heated seats which work really well , even after all this time !

Having said that , it doesn't come out in the winter but it does make top down spring and autumn driving a pleasure .

paz , that looks to be a lovely car .
