Find a good indie to reduce those bills. I v nearly picked up a 65k mile ex Jersey 1991 500 SL the other week for just over £3k, and for a little more I had the choice of 2 other cars. These really are way cheaper than they should be and there are clearly a lot for sale out there.

That does sound a bargain. Having watched these a fair bit, it seems the cheapest way to buy is via Ebay auction, unless of course you find one at a physical auction somewhere!

Many vendors ask silly money for ropey cars.

You do need to be careful especially with cars in the 3-4k bracket. A few "minor issues" can quickly end up costing a few k and then you're into a different market where a better car might have been a more sensible buy. Fully agree on some dealers offering ropey cars priced above market value, I'm sure some have no idea what a half decent car looks like.

Totally agree. I'd not buy one with any rot on it though...v expensive to sort. The Jersey car was fine though, it's just that I don't have any more space...had it have been a facelift, I'd have found room though smile

Regarding the roof removal, I used to get wife to help me with the one on our 107, she gave up while she was pregnant (most of the last 5 years - we have 3 kids). So I've had to bother the neighbours for assistance which isn't ideal. She's not keen to resume helping, so I've been thinking about this. My garage is integral and has a plastered ceiling so I'm nervous about trying to attach a hoist to it.

There is this thing called a shuttle, Mercedes used to sell. I don't think you can get them new any more and when they come up on ebay I suspect they are popular.

What do you know... I google to find pictures of it and who's should appear but a known merc fan and ph'er who has a 129.

Anyway... I keep meaning to have a look out for an engine crane which I am sure I could use to do the same job. A hardtop cradle came with my car - I just need the lifting gear.

I was interested to hear you went to Gatwick Mercedes, they are my closest dealer but I've not visited them since they moved to the new site. I generally use MB specialist INAutos who are closer to me, charge less and probably see/restore more of the cars of a similar age to mine than MB do these days. They had several R129s in yesterday when I picked up my 124, including a nice designo mystic blue SL Edition left hooker on French plates.

I've also used INAutos and been happy with them. MB Gatwick matched their labour rate and they're easier to get to, though I agree they probably don't see anywhere near as many older cars as INAutos do. I do still have more work that needs doing, so will be taking it to them once I've got organised.

Seems there's a few Sussex/Surrey R129s around.

Maybe time for a pint and kick some tyres (not keen on going for a drive as mines only a 300 and I'd get left behind hehe)

Mines only a 280 - and a not even a R129, but a R107, but I'd still be interested in a gtg.

I have one of those cranes and the winch sitting in a friend's shed in Hampshire. I have never set eyes on it - bought it blind. What are they worth?

Bumped in to nav p at IN Autos. Nice to meet you! Interested in principle in a meet up, but wife and kids might make timing difficult.

I'd say collection in a van is worth a big discount: I wouldn't want to wrap one and take it to the post office. wink
