I recently bought a 2005 65 amg and have to say I love it! It is a heavy car but just doesn't feel it, it pulls like nothing else I've driven and sounds glorious. But most of all its the effortless way it does it. More oomph than a murcielago yet barely raises a sweat to launch past pretty much anything. Amazing bit of engineering

It's a cl65 amg one of 10 in the uk I've been told. Not sure how accurate that is . Love the car. Uses no more fuel than my transit so happy days

I wanted the sl tbh, but double the price for same sort of mileage and year. Cl was a bargain all things considered

The great thing with the CL is that it is a coupe but you still get 4 (real) seats.
Only 9 were sold in France in 2004/2005, so 10 in the UK, that seems correct.
Those are very rare...

I got a run in one a couple of years back, they are a total wall of power. Fantastic things.

According to howmanyleft.co.uk, between 2004 and 2006 there were approximately 35 new registrations in the UK. And there are presently 31 either taxed or SORN'd.

I have an SL 65 AMG (R230) and agree totally about the engine. I have previously owned a 997 Turbo and SL55 Those who criticise these V12 twin turbo cars as being pointless compared to the V8 have never experienced the V12 effortless power ( just shows how much torque plays a part in a cars performance) As to scarcity these and the CL have all the right ingredients to become future classics

Would love to hear the engine with the roof down which you can! The cl is so well insulated you don't realise what it sounds likes but start it from cold in a garage!!! Heaven

Also to add the tuning possibilities on the 65 are impressive. I'm hoping to complete the package soon, which is an ecu remap, upgraded intercooler pump and cat removal. The result will be better noise and 740 bhp with 926 ftlb. Now that's crazy stuff on a luxuRy German motorway car! Also no limiter and 200+ potential. I think about 205 ish judging on th gearing

Who is doing the tuning work and what advice have you had in relation to the gearbox?

AMG "turned the engine down" from 1200NM to 1000NM to, apparently, protect the gearbox...

If the gearbox would, in fact, be alright I'd be tempted to turn the motor back up to the full 1200NM (mine came de-limited from the factory).

It's kleemann and yes I've heard the extra torque might bugger the gearbox! Which is a bit worrying, but you only live one Eh!

I believe an upgrade for the gearbox to protect against the torque is available, but it's not cheap. Tbh a replacement gearbox isn't too bad. I suspect that the truth is the extra torque would have made the car (a cl) too unwealdy with wheelspin happening too often. Well I hope that's it!!

What is your car bob? Is it completely delimited or upto 300kph. I understand mb only offer this as tyre manufactures only rate them to this level.

W220 S65; according to the paperwork it's option code VMAXBR220 described as "de-restriction of the speed limiter, max. speed 300km/h", EUR2,150; there is a sticker on the inside of the filler flap with reference to Michelin tyres running absurd pressures...

There seem to be a number of modified 65s with standard gearboxes in the US, if the internet is to be believed - perhaps it's not a problem and is down to driveability as you say.
