I have been taking photos recently, particularly during the radio install. Hopefully I will find out this week when it can go into the bodyshop. So I may do a bit of a build blog in the nit to distant future along the lines of my BMW build.

Which is here if anyone is interested.

The S class didn't really start out as a project, just a car to get to work in. But it has grown on me so much it is sort of turning into a mini restoration.
Anyone interested in a W220 restoration style blog?

Always good to read a "long term test" thread! Forums in general are filled too much with horror stories and scare mongering.

I'm Ex MB and love the w220. I'm not restrained enough to get 57mpg however... Would love one though.

I think you are all a bit pessimistic on the mpg, I set of very early and did 55mph the whole way for 3.5 hours. Just returning 57 mpg. It really did to, the fuel needle hardly moved. I know if I put the boot in she can glug through the fuel. But if you are very patient it can be done.
I once did that with my SLK (3.0 litre V6 auto petrol) and got 40mpg so I can believe it of a diesel.

My daily smoker is a w210 with the 4 cylinder version of the inline cdi engine. I do a 120 mile round trip during the weekdays, A28, A229,M2 to the Northfleet turn off so mostly dual carriageway. Winter months I get high 50's low 60's, when the weather warms up it will do high 60's low 70's. This is at around 65-70 mph. Tank to tank calculations show that the obc is off by around 3 or 4 percent.

When I eventually change jobs and don't have to travel so far a s320 is right at the top of my want list, couldn't care less if it looks like a Hyundia.

Hampster, what make of radio did you fit? The Comand is gradually packing up in my car but I haven't got a clue what to replace it with.

Thanks for the update, perhaps you should start a thread in the reader's cars section with somemore pictures.
OP, just hit the report button and ask the mods to move it, then you can carry on with what you've already posted so far.

I went with An Xtrons double din this time. Obviously I had to remove the compleat facia and replace it, but I don't mind a bit of a project. Who you use is up to you, Xtrons do not have a great reputation to be honest, they are a cheaper brand. That being said I fitted an Xtrons single din fold out screen version in my W202 and another in my W170. This time I had the space to go double din. Have had no problems with the units at all. They just seem to be getting better. I will do an install section in the new blog. Which I think I will start on a separate page. Clean sheet and all that.

Xtrons are available through Ebay or there own website. There is a wide variety, I fitted a double did into my friends W163 but he really went for the cheapest model (the 605g), which has big plasticky buttons and I don't think is very attractive. I went for a bit more expensive unit (the TD697g). This seems to work very well has a nicer menu system and better Nav.
They are all available here.
