Just bought a R107
Discussion
The Mercedes 107 is a fantastic car, I owned one for about eight years.
Sold mine about three years ago, and if I had the space, I would never have sold it.
I had driven the car throughout Europe, visiting Germany, Belgium, France, Switzerland and Italy, and without ever braking down, mine had 120k miles on it and drove fantastic.
It was one of the very last 107's produced and was completed in August 1989 in the last week of production, I was never able to find out the final VIN number, so not sure how many more were built, but certainly not many as the 129 was already being produced.
Hope you enjoy your car, I still miss mine.

Mine was one of the last too, made on the very last day of production, with only 4 107's made after it. I had this confirmed by the MB Classic centre in Stuttgart. Like you, we've used ours on a few European trips with no trouble at all. Great cars!Sold mine about three years ago, and if I had the space, I would never have sold it.

Been using Sam and superman Bruce at the SL shop for years.
Outstanding service. Great, great guys. Bruce has provided me with the best service bar none in the car industry. I have been through many many many brands and cars!
Well spec'd post 1986 r 107s are now well passed £30k.
Go try and find a well kept dark colour, leather seats, sub-50k miles, no-rot below that money is nigh on impossible.

I've just picked up my R107 from the SL Shop this afternoon. It's a beautiful 420SL in Astral Silver. I didn't plan on going for a silver car, but after driving it, I couldn't resist. Especially when I realised it had a blue convertible hood!
I've never worked out how to attach a picture, but you can see the car on the SL Shop website - it's at the top of the Sold list.
Fantastic service from the folks at SL Shop.

I'm assuming (or hoping) you are referring to sub 50k miles cars being over 30k. I've got a budget of 20-24k and am hoping I could get a black 300sl with around 70-80k mies. Not too concerned re leather as I like the check seats.I can't decide whether to buy dealer or save 5k or so privately and spend that on bodywork. Would 5k go a long way? I'm not talking total resto - rather just totally sorting out any body problems on a good private buy that the best dealers would have sorted for their cars. I've certainly noticed that the lighter colours and red are less expensive. What generally is the premium for leather?Outstanding service. Great, great guys. Any advice much appreciated.
From my tour round the SLShop by Bruce, showing the amount of work that goes into some parts of bodywork restoration, I would say 5k could get swallowed up in no time on the wrong car !
I think if you share your budget with the guys there, they should be able to supply the car you are after.
