You should get a AMG I know a few who have had A45's or E63's as a courtesy car.

Nothing wrong at all with asking. I just wouldn't go in with diva type demands along the lines of being entitled to one. By the way OP, I'm not suggesting for a moment that you would do that. At least if they give you an E63, it won't overheat! I really like the power delivery of the bi-turbo lump actually, it really is a cracking engine.

I'm reading on the american forums that AMG have admitted this is a problem and have done a software upgrade where they flash the ECU and raise the tempature threshold from 135 degrees to a higher temp which is supposed to be perfectly safe as they deem 135 degrees to be very conservative. Anyone heard of this or had it done? still doesn't cure the overheating issue.

I'm thinking the oil coolers from the Black series would cost an arm and a leg. For the people that track want to track there cars i feel really sorry for as thius must affect them every single time. would removing the front grill and bonnet help? would that affect the handling of the car? yes you will look a bit of a tit but it could help matters.

What do you guys think?

I agree this is a reported problem but for some clarity, I have tracked my 507 twice and no limp mode issues. The highest oil temp I saw at Bedofrd was 125 and I found the car actually seemed to recover from my sessions quicker than my previous e92 m3 did in terms of the brakes 'recovered' quicker but I had no issues with my m3. This was back in March and it was dry but quite windy/chilly - ideal track weather.

The only thing to report on my 507 was that I did have a small issue that at the gear change max rpm point I noticed when the car got hotter it had a slight hesitation when changing gear but it didn't stop me at all and no limp mode. I first noticed this is manual mode, so changed to sports + but it was the same.

I've done a few track days so wasn't just potting around the circuit.

I wonder if the bonnet vents courtesy of the black series help? I mean they are functional and do channel air from the bonnet to the engine bay area. They are not just cosmetic.

Saying that the temps the OP describe, on the road, seem really high.

So my input here is that my car so far, is not having significant heat problems.

Am going to book mine into Mercedes after having spoke to MBGB. My oil temperature on the road can get well over 135 if i'm in the mood.

You all need the C63 Package 440 Version 1.3 from AMG

Note the bit that says "This modification has to be paid by the customer and may not be claimed as warranty or goodwill."

I think this is scandalous!

With eight hours labour plus the price of the parts, it's not going to be cheap.

What a joke. They ruin what was a reliable pre-facelift system by redesigning it to be worse post-facelift and then expect owners to pay to fix it. Erm! Does not compute.

Is it worth writing in to top gear/what car etc etc to name and shame. Would they be interested? It is bugging me that Mercedes expect us to pay for this upgrade to rectify a fault that should never of been there in the first place and is a design error. The car simply does not do what it says on the tin.

There's a chap who had issues with his Porsche, he had it wrapped detailing it as faulty then parked it outside his local dealership.

Not sure if he had any joy but it must of made him feel a whole lot better.

It does boil your piss doesn't it when a manufacturer won't accept there's an issue but just happens to produce a solution....

Good luck

The person who I nabbed this off is in Australia and there it costs $8,000 AUD which is about £4,500.

Totally scandalous!

So it came about as a result of issues obviously noticed in the F1 medical cars when they have to drive fast around a track (which they don't have to do for long, eg safety car duties for a few laps max). This sort of car purports to be (is) a performance car so why isn't it designed to be driven as such without cooling issues???

As previously said - scandalous

Hi was very much interested in putchasing C 6.3....but reading all this re - gearbox overheating / limp mode im well put off, is this fault confined to early or later Cars, im thinking of a 10 / 11 /12 plate Car...would never Track Car, but see that it can become a problem on fast road use. Any help in best year to purchase be gratefull. Pete

I've got a '12 plate (facelift) and haven't had any overheating issues using on the road - even when having fun!! However if track use is compromised by these issues MB really ought to recognise that and address it as a design fault on the car as it's not a shopping shuttle. Even with the knowledge that there is potential for overheating the car will not disappoint in any way - just get one!!!!

In my opinion, limp mode or overheating on the road is not normal - the oil temp the OP describes, 135 - I've not seen anymore than 125/126 on two different track events (and no limp mode either). So if you do not intend to track your car I would say there are no issues to be worried about, IMO.
