Merc Techs; engine swap advice please...
Discussion
I have a 98 C240 Estate which I love, but is rather lacking in the 'Go' department. I have been looking at the low prices of similar aged E55 saloons and thinking of an engine swap. I have experience of 'old school' swaps ( Ford & Chevy V8s into Capris/ Zodiacs and Cosworths into various things ) and fabrication, but nothing relatively 'modern'. Apart from the greasy bits what else will I need to pirate from a donor car besides the ECU/ Engine loom? Thank you in advance.
I have an SL500 engine from a 6,000 mile car 1 yr old w230, removed years ago after a gulp of water, still loose built from inspection, comes with coils, loom, plenum, drive plate, just wants air mass, starter, a/c comp and stuff like that, even has the drive belt. Was a running motor and have the donor details somewhere, one rod was just touching a crank web, but it needed two. They were £96 each then, and the head gaskets £33
At the time there was only one new engine at M.B. globally, it was just under £15k + vat. I have a CL500 and kept it as a spare, but with 179k still there is no need for it, so I thought i'd use it for a q car sometime.

A lot of people have put a 55 engine into a C43, but I haven't heard of anyone transplanting anything bigger into a V6 engined car. If you were, a 3.2 litre M112 would be the easiest, possibly even the supercharged version from the C32. I think the hard bit would be getting the electronics to talk to each other, as the physical fitting should be straightforward.
Yes 74Merc, the electronic witchcraft is the bit I need some clues about. I know that the EIS will have to come from the donor vehicle with the loom, but I am sure there are some other mysterious black boxes which it will also need. I guess I will be doing the r&d myself on this one! Thank you both for your input
think I'd be tempted to go over to www.mbclub.co.uk for this one
