Anyone got any experience of this engine – what it is like to drive, running costs, reliability etc? I can’t find a great deal out there, I suppose because it is quite rare (far far more diesels!). I have seen one that interests me, haven’t driven yet but keen to hear any views.

I see the same engine is also in the E Class

I was picked up in an E250 CGI a couple of months ago and really really liked it. The engine was massively smoother than the one in the 250CDI I had a loaner. Night and day. Really suited the character of the car.

I think Evo of all people reviewed it and really liked the low down punch/midrange/top end/refinement and the handling. I think the they were making comments about it feeling like a "giant GTI" or something.

I think it's a peach and would have one all day long if I was in the market for that sort of car.

I've had a C250 CGI estate since Feb. Bought it with 20k on the clock, now at 28.5k. On a 45 mile commute which includes some B roads, the A33 and 34 and the M4, I average around 37mpg. Long motorway runs will see it in the low 40s mpg. I do switch off the stop/start though.

The engine is very smooth and with the 7speed auto you don't feel the shifts, just see the rev needle drop. It will pick up its skirts when prodded and makes a nice growl. Normal motoring the engine is very quiet and at +/-80leptons is turning 2.3-2.4k revs. 70mph sees dead on 2k revs.

I've had one service so far and was quoted c£400 for an 'A' and c£500 for a 'B' but I have a servicing plan so can't give exact figures.

Let me know if you need more info.

I'm looking at an S212 E250cgi to replace my ageing V70.

Im not sure I can stretch to a 350cdi and the 4 cylinder diesels dont appeal after 5 cyl turbo petrol in the Volvo.

The one ive seen has 50k on it, so assuming it has plenty of life left in it? What are the engines like for lengevity? Any issues?

It would be a nice smooth cruiser, I'd imagine...

I presume it is the direct-injection version of the M271 engine? If so, then timing chain issues, though I recall them being different issues to the port injection versions. Google should assist.

A mate of mine recently bought a 10 plate one on low-ish miles (60k-ish IIRC). Looks immaculate.

FWIW I have a 10 plate E500 and, apart from having the rear Airmatic bellows replaced, it's been v reliable since I bought it in 2017.
