Hi

Having read the EVO, CAR and Autocar pre-reviews - I found myself in a Mercedes dealer on Saturday and ordered a GT-S. Anyone else got one coming?

I may be ordering one in the next 6 months. What lead time do you have Anjum?

Question...to me the GT S is in a straight fight with the R coupe and even speaking as a Merc fanboy with 3 of em on the drive, I can't see a way past the big cat, so what is your choice made on?

I really really want to like the GT, but I really can't see why anybody would buy anything other than the R at the moment , that includes Aston buyers et al. The cat just has everybody outgunned. It all feels distinctly unJaguar like!

I guess if the Jag does nothing for you then that's the simple reason not to go that route

In addition, for me anyway, there is something very special about a standalone AMG car.

That's the short simple answer to your question.

Having seen these rocking around the streets of Affalterbach last week, out in the wild I personally don't think the cat gets a look in. I like Jag's (I went through three of them relatively recently) but I think the F-Type is already starting to look familiar because of it's close relationship to similarly shaped XKR's and Astons. The GT looks genuinely fresh and new - a little challenging maybe, certainly not naturally pretty but it's so wide, low and well stanced that gives it a presence that the Jag can't compete with.

Then you move inside and where the Jag has cheap plastics, relatively ordinary switchgear and quite a plain design (grab handle excepted), just look at the GT;s interior. Amazing....and although I accept it's mainly subjective, the feeling of solidity in comparison to the Jag is a fact. When I was comparing a 911 and F-Type, before plumping for my current SLS, I looked at an F-Type R as I'd always wanted one since selling my XKR-S. But the interior simply wasn't good enough for a £100k car.

Obviously non of us know how a GT drives but I can confirm the sound is right up there with the best, even with the turbo's. It was never going to be any other way was it!

OP - congratulations and now welcome to your long wait. Do you know where you are on the list and have you been given an estimated delivery date?

Personally, I'm holding firmly onto the SLS until I have driven a GT. At which point, knowing me, I'll probably buy one!

That's fair enough Palm after all you do walk the walk!
Understand about the interior the Jag is a cut below but then so is the 911.

Just an alternative view - can't take away anyones preference for what is another great car! I know the GT doesn't look the best in pics and even under the fake environment where I saw it the first couple of times (in the AMG showroom and then at the Paris show), it still didn't look amazing. But out on the street, it was immediately distinctive.

See this is why I think we are in a little role reversal currently. The Germans have in modern times carried the biggest sticks but inside packages that had been designed...well by Germans. Jag has had the aesthetics but not the biggest stick. Now the cat is the baddest thing in the jungle but it's interior design lets it down. I'm not overly convinced by the GT's interior but will remain to be convinced.

I think the F-Type tries too hard. It's a bit shouty and loud - and if you're going to be shouty and loud - then be really Shouty and Loud! I have other cars that fill this role perfectly.

I think that the GT-S is a usable, everyday car, which is a reasonable size and looks to be easy to live with.

I received an email from my dealer yesterday, saying that price list and delivery slot will be confirmed over the next couple of weeks.

I'm very much looking forward to the GT-S, but I will wait till I can see one in the flesh as it has to be significantly better to tempt me away from the doors on the SLS....

Having said that, I can see it being a brilliant daily driver.

Good point well made re the Jag - compounded by some owners revving their car hard at every opportunity to show us all how loud the sports exhaust is.
By all means try hard, just don't make it so obvious wink

Will wait for the massive discounts to be offered after around twelve months making the new cars cost way less than the one year old models on the used market.

I'd be surprised if the answer to number 7 was anything but naked carbon....but then AMG do have the design studio who will be able to set this to any specification you want.

Any idea of prices on that lot?

Sadly, MB will only provide naked carbon bonnet, confirmed yesterday, so thats crossed off the list. Strange really, as my Maserati MC Stradale has a carbon fibre bonnet, which is painted body colour on the outside - looks great when you pop the bonnet open. Ho Hum. We went through the edition 1 spec, with carbon roof and bonnet (so no panoramic roof). So I gave it a miss, as I understand MB are already working on a GT3/GT3RS competitor - out in 2016......now that should be very interesting.......

Anyway - Deposit all paid and just waiting for the delivery date...

Hey Anjum. Spec looks nice. I've ordered one and been given a delivery April / May. I haven't seen the official spec list yet nor the codes your quoting on your post. Was that from the dealer?

Any news on the factory collection question?

Regarding F - Type R comments. I don't think the Jag is compariible. I've been considering a 911 Turbo and am tempted by the 4 wheel drive, but although the jag is beautiful in pictures, it hasn't got the street presence. I went to see the GT at MB World and it will have road presence by the bucket loads. It doesn't photo very well though. Strange.
