I'm not so hung-up about Top Gear lap-times, which in the real world are only good for bragging rights down the pub.
All of the cars in this market segment are plenty fast enough and offer more performance than can be safely used on the road.

I do miss the sound of the sls which, along with the gull-wing doors, was the main reason that I bought it.

The sound of the v8 in the MP4-12c is one of the worst aspects of the car, but the cars other attributes like the superlative handling more than make up for it.

I have yet to hear a good sounding turbo v8 engine and it will be interesting to see what Ferrari do with the 488.

It definitely doesn't sound synthesised in person - OK, it's no SLS but it's not far off and if anything, it's louder. However, loudness is not a measure of success (as I found out with the truly diabolical sounding F80 M3) but compared to BMW's efforts with their latest M engines (even the decent sounding M5/6 TT V8), the AMG is on another level.

That Top Gear lap time.....I'm surprised not much has been said about it yet because it is, quite frankly, outrageous!

Seconded on the sound - the way the sound came across on Top Gear was nothing like what I've heard in person.

Seconded on the lap time too - whilst irrelevant in the real world grand scheme of things, the time itself was unbelievably fast and worthy of a little more credit I think.

Trust me - it sounds awesome in the flesh! I'm pretty sure that the 488GTB will sound amazing....especially at 8K revs......

I'm getting bored waiting - but at least my 458 Speciale is being delivered at the beginning of March - so I can play in that for a bit......

I'm going to Geneva - specifically to see the Aventador SV - I'm really hoping it not the car that is doing the rounds on the internet - I suspect it won't be (hopefully)......and I'll check in on the GT-S when I'm there.

Sorry, but I can't see any way that the GT-S is two seconds faster than a 458 round any track. Something not right about that lap time, to me.

I dunno Jack, the GT was getting rave reviews at Laguna Seca for it's track capabilities. And in terms of comparisons with the 458, the difference was 'only' 1.5 seconds.

It'll boil your piss even more when you consider that a standard SLS cabrio was only 0.5 seconds slower than a 458! So when you consider a GT S is 2 seconds faster than an SLS convertible, that adds plenty of credibility to the GT's lap time.

Don't forget the Lambo Huracan did the track in 1:15.8....so 3.3 seconds quicker than the 458. Maybe the fezza isn't all that....God forbid!

Hi all,

Does anyone think they may be taking delivery of their GT in May? Would anyone be interested in displaying it at a merc enthusiast show?

Cheers.
Nick.
Nick, mine arrives in April - what and where would be involved?

Cheers,
Jason
Thanks Jason, I've sent you a pm.

All a bit odd. Maybe part of the track has been re-surfaced? Different driver?

Even stranger when you compare TG to Evo times. The complete reverse.

So which do you believe?!? I suppose it depends which horse you have in the race biggrin

We can both believe what we want to believe biggrin Ah well....I'm sure as you say there's plenty of variations in conditions, temperature and driver in all cases.

But theres no reason to suspect something's not right just because it generated a good time on a particular day - I do actually believe it was perfectly legitimate on the basis that all other reports I've read (or seen) suggests the GT is quite handy on track. Not that any of it applies to me anyway - as long as it can go well in a straight line on the M1 I might not crash it! laugh

I probably will yes, but I honestly don't think I'll have the balls to drive a car of that value round it! I'm a lot more risk averse to that place than I used to be a few years ago getmecoat

So I went to MB Stuttgart on Friday to see the GT S. They had about 40 of them awaiting shipping to dealers in all corners of the globe, in all manner of spec, right hand drive, Edition 1 etc etc. Quite a place. Anyway, it's defo the Selenite Grey for me possibly with the night pack, which is a new MB colour being introduced on the GT. It's a really pure grey with depth and beside the old palladium silver, looked much better. The Magnetite black was a strange shade of green in the sunlight, so that was out. The designo grey was very slick, but it's tough to maintain as you can't polish out any scratches....Silver designo looked good but made the car look a bit bigger than the darker colours - it really suits the black wheels though and gives a good contrast. One of the surprises was the Hyacinth red, which if I was a bit more daring, I would go for. Looked quite special. About half of them were white. Must be a popular choice somewhere...

Seeing the car in the flesh (in a colour other than the Sunbeam yellow) was interesting. There are angles where it looks quite compact and small, and others where it looks massive (from the rear). The whole car is an optical illusion. We started up a couple and the sound with the pipes open is pretty epic....

Oooooh how exciting....this is the colour I've gone for woohoo

However, I do feel like I've taken a big risk on the basis I've never seen Hyacinth in person and some of the real-life photo's I've seen on other cars are very variable!

Did you see any in the Brilliant Blue, which was the option I very nearly went for?

I did see the blue too but didnt have the impact of that red. Unfortunately I couldn't take any pics outside. The red had a real lustre and depth in the sun and I think you've made a good decision. Ae you going for the black wheels? Im not a fan in general of black wheels but H red or silver, it works. I presume you've seen this video. http://youtu.be/jI3LtiRIdek

So long as you've spec'd carbon and night pack to minimise the chrome then the red will look stunning. I'm on my 2nd red AMG. Love it!

Oh, and I saw an S63 Coupe in hyacinth a couple of weeks back. Had all the carbon and black trims so it looked the bees knees!

thumbup

I have spec'd the night package, but not the carbon package (all the carbon packs are outrageously priced so are only for those who don't care about budget!).

Night package gets rid of all the chrome for gloss black including a thin strip round the rear lights so all should be good if the red is decent. I'm a big fan of red cars and the C63 in red with a beige / light cream interior has to be one of my favourite combo's.

Thats good to hear smile

After much deliberation on the wheels I decided to stick with the standard wheel.....but it was a close call. I'd actually rather have the Edition 1 wheels which are the same design as the standard wheels on the GT S, but the wheel inners are gloss black as opposed to the standard dark grey (both with a polished face).

September.....it seems such a long way away.

Has anyone gone for the high end Burmeister sound system? It the final piece I'm deciding on but I don't know if it's worth it.

I'm going for the ordinary GT S wheels too and I agree I like the part black versions on the Edition 1 although I believe it's easy to have them customized to look the same.

I would avoid the Burmester option, I had one on a Cayenne Turbo and it was vert average, nowhere near as good as standard Range Rover speakers. Probably better to have the standard audio and if it's not good enough take it to a specialist who should be able to upgrade it for a fraction of the Burmester price.
