Get a CL 65 AMG C215, one of the most beautiful Mercedes ever... and 10 years after it can still destroy many current sport cars... tested by myself.

I guess the speedometer goes up to 220 mph...

The CL65 is magnificent but there's only one for sale at the moment for £24k, a good CL600 Bi-turbo is less than half that.

The car for sale now doesn't have the correct AMG branded instruments which puts me off a bit too.

I had the rear ABC go on me... yes it was £900 a strut and one cannot rely on any used part or aftermarket copies..
Agree on used but the Arnott aftermarket / refurbished struts come with a lifetime guarantee so are very much the ones to go for over the MB offering. My SL has them all round and no problems thus far.

They are about $630 plus a $300 core charge. MB specialists should know all about them, mine was looked after by one in Bournmouth (iirc this was under the previous owner) who did all the work.

Not sure if the guarantee even stands outside of the US but the fact they are prepared to offer one at all is a very good sign as far as I am concerned.

See now that car at Marlow doesn't have the AMG branded instruments either.

It put me off the one on ebay. I'm beginning to think it shouldn't.

Anyone able to explain?

Were the AMG instruments really on the W215 models?

Yes they were.

But it shouldn't necessarily put you off.

I'm trying to find a picture of my old '55, and see if it had the AMG branding on the dash or not. I just can't remember. However on the Marlow Car, this may very well be down to a previously failed instrument cluster - apparently failure here could impact PDC and boot release amongst other things. In replacing it the dealer might have advised they could source the AMG-branded cluster for $xxxx or the standard one for $xxx... smile

But looking at this example at Marlow Cars, well, it wouldn't faze me at all. That looks a wonderful car. Think of how much 'vehicle' you're getting for 20k? Incredible.

I miss mine a lot. The ultimate time-shifter. The loud pedal in that thing was devilish: it could stop, slow down, re-wind or speed up the world around me. Glorious motoring.

thanks,

the black one for sale on ebay was also without the AMG dash but the listing claimed to have a letter from AMG stating that it was as originally fitted to the car. I got in touch with the owner and everyone had been asking about this. That car was 44k miles and asking £24k. So I guess £19k for 55k miles is fair enough.

Phenomenal car and of course the most desirable but the ultimate for value for money is the CL600 of similar age. A conservative 500bhp, up to 580bhp with DMS. Several examples for sale around 55k miles for under £10k.

Wikipedia claims fewer than 200 W215 CL65AMGs were produced which makes them incredibly rare. Although I prefer the W215's styling to the later cars I guess the availability of later CLs with the same engine will continue to get in the way of it achieving 'classic' status. Mind you if petrol prices keep falling people might start seeing the value of big V12s again!

Pits and TK,

So, you worried me. And I went out to my garage to check.hehe The ex Marlow car has got the V12Biturbo stuff written on it. For the record it is AMG V12 Biturbo over the rev counter, not as above with AMG on the speedo and V12 etc on the rev counter.

To put the market/pricing discussions in perspective, you want this engine or something close? If it's not got 65AMG written on the car, it'll need to be a Black Series, Maybach or Pagani - so the internet says. The S and CL are completely mispriced in the market in my view; SL probably about where it should be.

Anyway, fabulous car.

The Marlow car has gone already before I had a chance to view it.

Mind you, with the CL600 Bi-turbo at under £10k is even better value (for a well maintained example) surely?

Besides that, how different is the engine really? Bored a tiny bit, mainly stroked to 6 litres. Same head as far as I can tell, bigger turbos, some ecu trickery, intercoolers? and a carbon engine cover. A visit to DMS would make up the power defecit pretty quickly.

Yes I am trying to console myself, the AMG cars are a lot nicer in the details and are generally better looked after too. Overall I think the 65 would be just about be worth the extra money but unless another one comes up for sale soon I won't have any choice.

For anyone thinking of a CL65, the experience detailed here: http://www.edmunds.com/mercedes-benz/cl-class/2005... may be amusing...

Ohhhhhh, I see, that's not the one I have acquired - hadn't realised they'd got in and sold another 65 so shortly after I took custody of mine (which is a W220) - will pipe down over here...

went in one recently actually, a friend has one. a huge amount of car for the money, no question, but a big part of the appeal of the CL for me was owning a V12. I didn't need the size of the S class and the SL was not accommodating enough so the CL hit the spot. The torque from the turbo versions puts the 63V8s to shame also!

strange goings on at Marlow, the 65 has been re-advertised at a higher price yet I'm told it's been sold on the phone.

Well. Original wheels included and hopefully the glass situation can be improved:
