So the Mrs and I went to spend a lovely afternoon in Richmond yesterday, so found a parking spot and headed off on foot.

I was parked a little in front of the white car below:

Imagine my shock to find, upon my return a few hours later, this:

Apparently it was an "unusually high tide" according to some stunned locals, and it was still rising when I took that picture. By the time I had got there, the water had already gone over the door sills and filled the inside of the car.

The rear wheel was about half way up and the front about a third when I took the pictures.

The windows had opened themselves, seats moved forward, random lights flashing and warning lights on the dash.

There were no signs anywhere - I had looked for parking restriction signs very carefully, and had another look after the flood - there were no warnings, there were no yellow lines etc!

Anyway, I eagerly await my insurance payout so I can get back into another car - it seems SL65's are still out of reach though frown

You know, when I saw the title and then saw the picture, I was expecting handbrake failure!

Still, that's unlucky, and a seriously high tide! Hope you get a reasonable insurance payout...

That's really horrible news, I think it's just an unfortunate incident. If your car is anything like mine, SLs don't particularly sit very low anyway. I hope all goes well with the insurance.

Sorry to hear that. I live in Richmond and there are signs (albeit hardly noticeable). The water level can change dramatically with the lowering and raising of the sluice gates at Richmond lock which is used to ensure enough water to navigate up to Teddington . Normally a lot of the excess water runs in to the old deer park but I've lost count of the number of times cars parked alongside the lock have had water level with the doors.. Once they open the gates this can take place in a matter of minutes and even catches people out on the footpath to Kew

fingers crossed you get it all sorted

So if it's not a one off and known about occurrence and there are no warning signs can the council not be held responsible?

I'd go for a '63 as I find the v12's are a bit too cultured and quieter

What a shame frown - doesn't seem obvious at all that the water would rise that high.

That's a real shame. Hate to see that happen to any car but gutted when it happens to an SL. Hope the insurance pays up promptly and you can get back in to another one asap. Keep us posted on what happens.

Is that outside the White Cross?

Left my bike locked to the railings there after a few circuits of Richmond Park.

Some old codger in the pub talking about high tides. Went outside and had to wade to get bike.

A couple of motorbikes and cars were going to have to have some drying out.....

Yes across from the White cross pub. A local told me that not too long ago someone's R8 got wrecked in the same spot I was parked in and the guy was actually crying.

I'm not too upset - it wasn't anybody's fault - just one of those things.

Upon my recommendation, the insurer is going to try to recover costs from the council.

It's unlikely it can be repaired - Paul at eurocharged who have done a lot to my car suggested MB labour is likely to be over £10k , plus new seats, electrics as needed, carpets, etc.... For a car that is worth £20k (including my insured modifications) it's very unlikely it can be repaired - and to be honest I'm not sure I would want it - water is going to have sat in places it shouldn't and whilst not immediately obvious, things may manifest later on at my cost.

As soon as I'm given the nod for a cash sum, provided it's still for sale, I've my eye on a lovely SL65 though - every cloud and all that!

ETA: one must laugh about his car being flooded on Water Lane!

Suppose the clue is in the name! Seriously it was probably named exactly for that reason but doesn't excuse the council from posting warnings

I think there are warnings along that area, even so I remember that the landlord of the Pub had his car flooded once!

Yes, another poster mentioned that there are but they are very difficult to see - I spent a few minutes looking around for parking restriction signs as I always do and couldn't see any signs - I certainly would have spotted warning signs had they been clearly placed and/or prominent enough.

And re. the naming of Water lane - I didn't know that was the name until after and, had I known, I certainly wouldn't have connected it!

Sorry to see that has happened, but every cloud has a silver lining and all that.

You'll get a better car at the end of it.

There is also the opportunity to make an uber retro Merc if you are that way inclined.....

The motor would be fantastic in a W124 of some description.biggrin

So try and buy/keep the salvage rights, i'd be interested in it!

If you're interested PM me, I enquired about salvage but Paul at Eurocharged put me off as it could cost an absolute fortune to put right.

The car dyno'd at ~550bhp and 600lb/ft so if you're interested then I'm happy to help you get your hands on the engine.
