I have just taken the plunge and got myself a C55. Happy so far but I have some questions I was hoping someone may be able to answer for me.

In the cluster display I have a digital speed readout in the bottom half which seems to be in kph rather than mph. I have looked in the manual and followed the instructions to change this but the setting listed is not present. I have the ability to select temperature or speed, but nothing for the units in that menu. Am I missing something?

Secondly, I have an Iphone which I would dearly like to be able to hook up to the stereo but this doesnt seem easy. there appear to be a lot of different products on offer to do this at varying scales of cost but im not sure whats the best for me. Ideally I would like handsfree phone and the ability to stream music from the phone via either bluetooth or a USB. All I can see is one whcih does BT handsfree and streams music via FM over the radio. Can I control, the music with this though? i.e. change tracks/search for artists/albums etc? seems a bit of an oversight to not have proper phone connectivity for such a car.

For the phone any decent stereo shop will be able to fit a bluetooth unit to your existing stereo also check your glove box to see if it has a 3.5mm jack hole if it does you can plug your phone into it.

Or as an alternative I have now fitted a few of these:

Basically it is your phone so you can Play Music use your Phones Navigation Internet Radio etc all via the touch screen or if compatible the steering wheel controls.

Thanks for that. Yes I have looked at replacing the current comand unit. I was looking at an Alpine one something 530BT type thing. Looks quite good, to be honest though im quite enjoying the Merc system with the voice control and nav in the cluster etc. Its all a bit novel for me as ive been drivng a snotter for the last 6 yrs with a tom tom suckered to the windscreen and a sony head unit with USB/BT.

The whole "built in" thing is quite nice to have and i really didnt expect to feel that way about it. i just wish i could connect my phone to the existsing system properly. I do have a 3.5mm jack in the glove box yes. It would be nice to be able to navigate to tracks and stuff via the steering wheel/comand rather than using the phone itself though.

Unfortunately you cannot change the kph for mph or the outside temp yourself. It can be done through star and a UK delete. Command online.co.uk can help. Google it as it's been covered on the mb forums

Its a hell of a thing isnt it! Im still a bit nervous about what may go wrong tbh. Hope ive not bitten off more than I can chew and hope to god I havent bought a complete lemon.

Its a lovely place to be though. Even at 10yrs old its still pretty amazing what it can do, how it feels etc. I can imagine owning one from new must be quite an experience.

Hello Mini Me

I have an SLK of similar Vintage, same engine.

get yourself the 'lite' warranty from warranty direct if you are concerned about big bills. only £250 ish a year and so long as you've got your own recovery via AA or what got, bingo, a cheap warranty to cover the big stuff if you are seriously unlucky. it covers big stuff, mechanical failures etc. not wear and tear and niggles. even propper warranties will wriggle out of paying for niggles and stuff so why bother with them?!

normal warranties are eye watering, £800+ i was quoted per annum!

Comandonline seem to know their stuff, i phoned them a few times for bits and peices, advice etc. Like you i'm a fan of the built in "keep it factory" look and feel. Yes yes you can get a double din head unit and get with the kidz but the charm is in the older stuff and keeping it original.

I fitted a DABmotion into mine and that is just simply amazing. superb bit of kit for £100!

Congrats on the C55. Had a few AMG's over the years and they don't dissapoint.

A lot of guys fit these (do a ph search on Dension)

http://www.dension.com/product/iPod-iPhone-car-ada...

They trick the unit into thinking it has a cd changer attached.

Hello Mini Me

Useful friendly info
Cheers for that. Really appreciate it and I shall certainly give them a look. I have tentatively had a look at some of the warranties available and, as you say, have had quotes in the region of £900. I'm sorted with AA cover so no worries there. Thanks for the tip though. I have already found the comand online guys and will certainly be tapping them up soon I'm sure.

Once again. Thanks for your time and advice.

Warranty direct do not promote or advertise their 'lite' products. why would they, they want you to buy the whammo cost one. I since found out basically the full bore warranty only really entitles you to a 'arm around the shoulder' package where they tow the car to the place you pick and then get you home while its fixed. erm.... so that's a £700 uplift for bloody recovery? guy on the phone was quite sheepish "erm well, yea i guess sir"

They have a labour rate of £200per hour on the lite policy too so that'd even cover a main steeler for your pick of place to repair it.

For £700 you can buy a shed and run that until the C55 is fixed then sell the shed !

Again. Many thanks for that. I have a funny feeling I saw one of those on our for sale board at work. I didn't know what it was at the time but it was with a load of merc stuff Comand 2 and cd changer etc. I shall have to go take another look.

So. A month into ownership and I'm loving it. It's such a nice motor. I was never a fan of mercs in the past, always felt they drove and felt a little old man ish even if obviously a quality place to be and supremely comfortable. Always a little detached for my liking. I think I've found the perfect compromise between practical, desirable, fun, comfy, sporty and relatively cheap to run. Surprised they didn't sell more tbh. Anyway. Here's a cheeky pic of my new baby. I don't think the wheels are standard are they? Any experts care to comment? I'm assuming the originals were nicked or something.

No they aren't original but they look good so not to worry the off set is slightly wrong hence the rears sitting a bit deeper in the arches but it looks like a nice one. Well done

I wasn't really worried about the wheels, in fact I think they look a little better than the originals,

until you pointed out the offset difference. Now my OCD is twitching!

I'm on the look out for a C55 saloon ideally in black as I already have a silver Boxster. It will complement my Boxster and moped.

Interested to hear of any age related parts worth replacing or any gotchas worth attending too.

Also if anyone know of any good cars coming up for sale I'd be grateful for an intro.
