is this likely to be ruinous to a bank account? I know that the S class isn't a cheap car to run therefore i'm going in with eyes open.. just after opinions really

No, not necessarily.

Air suspension can be maintained on a budget these days with lots of aftermarket parts available including seal kits.
Engine and gearbox are known to be solid and reliable in these.

I'd be wary of the aftermarket headunit that's been fitted. A quality job shouldn't cause concern though.

Rust is the main thing i'd look for on a car of this year. They can have some other niggly electronic issues occasionally but parts are plentiful at breakers for these now.

The colour is a rare one and looks even better in the metal.

Thank you for the swift reply, I did think the colour was different better than the usual silver and black. regarding the aftermarket head unit, I've not seen it in the flesh but from the pics it seems to be ok

Not a great period for s class cars. The W140 was much more solid and better made. The first w220 Mercs were not reliable and very much built down to a price.

I'd look for a 1996-8 w140 s class or move to a rather newer one.

Are you talking from experience or just repeating what you've read on the internet.

I imagine the dealer would more or less have robbed that as a trade in, make a bold offer and you can't go wrong on such a cheap motor. Who else is going to buy it?
