I've seen that before, the production line photos are good to see again. I don't know what it is about the 500 E: it has some special mystique which is perhaps irrational in these days of cheap 500bhp saloons. I think it's the maturity and subtlety (two qualities entirely absent from its present-day descendants) that do it for me, although I find the wheel arch flares a bit lairy. I must beg, borrow and steal in order to afford one...

Here's one possibility to put your pennies towards

You may have seen this already but the Car and Driver comparison of the 500E v E34M5 v Audi S4 in April 92 tells you everything you need to know why you feel about the 500E500 as you do. This link should take you to the site where you can find it.

^^ Thanks for the link. I was reading a similar comparison in the January 1992 edition of Performance car, this time M5 - 500 E - Lotus Carlton.

That 4Star car is a mess.

Wow... I really want it.. despite (or because of) the fact that my daily driver is a W124 280 estate, despite the fact that I could get a CL55 / CL600 twin turbo for half the amount... despite all this I still want it!

Smoke silver over sports cloth... just yum.

If I hadn't just bought an MP4-12C I'd be seriously tempted. Good luck with the sale.

That's the one for me, too. I love the blue check cloth upholstery.

Probably will regret it a great deal but just don't have the space at the moment.

I've literally had to force myself to close that advert. That car looks absolutely stunning, but every time I buy an older car either somethings wrong with it or my ocd kicks in and it costs me a fortune.

If looked after and kept on top of there is not much financial burden apart from the usual that you will find on any car. That's why I am certain that the cars that are for 13-18k need a lot of money spent on them to get them right. I have the same OCD trust me and even if a bulb is not working it does my head in.

Could always pop it into storage for a while and dig it out when you miss it?There inherently strong machines but you do have to keep ontop of maintainance like you say.I've had a whole string of performance cars and it takes a special car for me to want to keep it but the E500 is just such a car, they seem to get right under your skin!driving

Storage in London is a major issue. Got a R107 500SL and haven't got a bloody clue where to put it, especially on the basis it has just been restored and is literally perfect.

Drop me an email, I store any cars of mine in an air conditioned building with a small classic storage business 1/2 hour from central london, very reasonable prices, and have used the same people for the last 20 years.
My e500 is there at the moment

Hi, not sure PM or email is working on Pistonheads at the moment. Can you drop me a mail at anissut@gmail.com?

Thanks.
