Find a friendly parts guy at your local Merc dealer, most 500E/E500 specific parts have to come from Germany but you'll be amazed what's still available,be careful when ordering from your online parts outlet as I've ordered numerous bits in the past, mainly suspension parts listed for the 500 and they've turned out to be the wrong fitment. It was a bit of a parts bin special with the chassis from the SL cobbled together by someone called Porschebiggrin best to order from Mercedes with your chassis number, prices are'nt to bad..

17" Evo2 wheels look good on the 500,various AMG's look lovely to...

The wheels on the HL plated car in the video below are wonderful, the only ones i'd have over the EVO2s I currently have.

The EVO2 size of 245/45/17 give you a much better range of sports tyres to choose from aswell. The handling was also noticeably improved.

Dave!

That 4Star car is a mess.
Can I ask why it is a mess? 4Star stock usually is pretty good. I'd love to own an E500 at some point in the future (prefer the look of the facelift cars). Although this one is considerably more expensive than others.

Look at the steering wheel!!! And the tyres! For goodness' sake.

Isn't the steering wheel a standard model for the Limited Edition?

Tyres look like they are Japanese? I appreciate the premise that owners who cannot afford to run their cars on the tyre brand originally fitted to the car or those from other quality tyres manufacturers may have skimped on the maintenance of the car but it seems a bit extreme to write the whole car off if that is the basis of that conclusion.

Assuming everything else stacked up wouldn't you just buy new tyres?

Here is Jon Aucott's latest E500 offering. The spare here appears to be a Uniroyal but it looks like Michelins elsewhere www.avantgardecars.co.uk/mercedes-e500-limited

Jon has probably sold and run more of the 500E500 than any dealer I know and I suspect he will have done his research on the car to know that it won't let its new owner down.

If I have got your reasoning on the 4Star Car wrong I apologise in advance.

The wood on the steering wheel is all cracked. It would grate on every single drive. The physical sensation would be a constant irritation. No caring owner or respectable seller would tolerate it. The Bridgestone tyres are brand new. They're a good brand but the Turanza ER300 is unsuitable for a car of this size, weight and performance. It's a mediuml car comfort tyre. This car is being hawked at top money: at least fix the wood (the console wood is cracked, too) and fit proper Michelin or Continental tyres.

Didn't pick up on the steering wheel cracks or the console wood damage.

Fixing either would be negotiated in the purchase price as would the Michelins or Continentals.

Sure. But what do these things tell you about the previous owner and the dealer? And what else is in the same order but not visible in the pictures?

If I was in the market to buy such a car, and at one time I was and did, they would tell me to pay particular attention to the all the other things that are pertinent to the decision to buy any used car and especially a 20+ year old car. With the 500E500 that is complicated by the fact that there is a very high probability that the car has spent most of its life outside the UK and you always face the risk of it not being what it purports to be.

I suppose my original premise was that if I was really interested in buying a relatively rare Mercedes I wouldn't discount it because its tyres were not up to scratch. I also accept the fact that many owners are less sympathetic in their treatment of a car's interior than I am and as you say that may be a warning to be more circumspect. The fact that a dealer has not rectified certain cosmetic deficiencies just confirms for me what is true of most dealers: caveat emptor.

Having purchased ten old Mercedes in the last twenty years and spending ages looking at each model prior to purchase you end up with a sense when a car is right and when its time to walk quickly away.

For the record I am not employed by Four Star Classics!

Hi Kneetrembler, I did neither in the end. My neighbour is a friendly chap and a car nut so the car is currently outside his place nice and safe. Haven't been driving it much recently as have been travelling etc. and I'm going to send it to Raikku soon (PH member 500E on here) to get a few bits done and have it all tip top for me to start using more regularly for commuting etc.
