So thought I’d update again.

Found me a great spec G350d (loads have zero options!). Going to see it Sunday.

It’ll be the first one I’ve driven so I’m on the fence if this is going to be a real prospect of a daily driver, for about 12k a year. 70% being motorway. It means i’ll Be selling my C63 ‘toy’ and 530d ‘workhorse’ to consolidate into an ‘eveeything’ Car. Just can’t help think I’m going to be left underwhelmed by that 350d engine.

Other option is an FFRR 4.4 SDv8. Just so many around and I like exclusivity! And the current LR customer service and reliability issues are putting me off. I’d consider dailying something like an RS6 or another petrol turbo’d spicy car assuming it will be better than the c63 to daily.

Or just stay as I am and forget the whole idea. Will update Sunday eve. I welcome any more feeeback on the subject till then!

I'd be surprised if a G350 was enough to cover both bases as an all rounder. Even a G63 I don't think really counts as a weekend car. I'd definitely say they tick the box as a daily but you may miss having something special to drive on weekends. To me that is a philosophical question though, can those two bases be properly covered by just one car. I'd say only very rarely, like a Ferrari FF perhaps.

well.. travelled 3 hours to see one Sunday.

I loved it as soon as I saw it. It is quite a ridiculous prospect I admit, selling my c63 and e50 530d to use potentially use a G350d as an everything car.

It had a surprising amount of shove in it from the 440 lb ft of torque. On idle It was typical diesel clatter but being honest there was no real give away it was a diesel once on the move. Driving position was very upright, Designo Ivory seats were comfy. This had the AMG styling, heated steering wheel, sunroof, and rear entertainment as optional extras on top of bi xenons, dab, nav, heated and cooled seats up front with heated rears as standard.

Biggest gripe for me at the moment is that steering. It was like steering the titanic - its very numb. Would I get used to it? of course I would. Could I live with this car every day and roughly 12/15k miles a year? not so sure...

bit of a head over heart choice. If this car was £10/15k cheaper I'd be all over it. But certainly a lot of money for a car I'm not quite 100% on.. Difficult one but for now It needs some further thought.

Makes me think that if I'm going to put up with a 25mpg 2 tonne jeep, then I may aswell look at an X5M or SVR because in the real world their going not far off in terms of running costs!

You'll get used to the steering. The main gripe for me is the auto gearbox, particularly when moving off. It is very slow to react.

So fking cool though. We must have very similar taste in cars (C63 + 2018 RRS)

Having said that, i fell for the "cool" factor with a backed out twisted defender - not so fun daily. Especially after a RRS which is uber comfy

Hmm they are really tempting.

I know my 2018 RRS will be shedding value, wondering if i should get out of it and into a g...

Hi irfan. I used to have a G350. 2011 model. I had the car for 4 years and used it as a daily driver.

I have driven the 2017 G350 and it is so much better than the 2011 model. The difference is huge (before I even added the bigger wheels). So I would say go for it.

Which version of the 350 engine is in the G? In my GL it pumps out about 265bhp but in my previous ML it was only 220-something.

Makes a fair bit of difference. The slightly heavier GL is significantly quicker than the ML was, and doesn't change down as readily uphill.

I've been told you can have them mapped to over 300bhp but I've been waiting to see if anyone recommends an outfit for this.

According to my dashboard, I've averaged 23.8mpg over the past 16K+ miles.

I fancy a G but I'm conflicted over a diesel for a round-the-world trip I'm planning, or a G55/G63 for some fun before I go (in something more tractor-like).

Theyre just so cool, i'd take the cool factor over the supposed luxury and unreliability of a RR any day of the week !

The G350 haS the V6 with 211 BHP. I've always been against remapping because of the Mercedes warranty...and when stuff goes wrong it is expensive on the G, so well worth having the warranty. If you get Brabus chip etc, it will keep your warranty intact.

I just tried the G63 and love it. Hence why I sold the G350. Round the world trip sounds awesome. The guy who bought my G350 is going to Europe and then probably taking it to South America after.

Totally agree with your reluctance to possibly invalidate your warranty. I’m working with slightly older cars though so it’s less of an issue.

I intend to retire earlier than normal and take an Australian off-road caravan to see the arctic circle and the deserts, and other places where you don’t find many (any?) people.

The traditional car for the Ozzies is a Toyota Land Cruiser but as a Merc fan I thought a G would be perfect. So I’m looking at an early G350 with the 7G-Tronic and possibly portals although that is probably unnecessary really.

But early retirement is a good 5 years away, which is why I’m considering something fun for today.

Sounds like a perfect plan. Will be an amazing trip. Wish you all the best with it and your early retirement. Let us know if you end up getting the G
