I need to take this all in!

What is happening to the GL the mighty 7 seater if all Merc SUV's are GL class?

I spoke to Mercedes and they said the ML is no more, replaced by the GLE SUV (Which is longer and taller than the outgoing ML) though not by much.

The GLE Coupe is the GLE in coupe form only available as a 350 Diesel, 450 petrol or 6.3 petrol but no doubt more variants will follow.

I need to lie down now.

The point is that GLE (just "GLE" - it's not officially going to be called GLE SUV) is the M Class (or ML if you like smile ) with a different name and a bit of a facelift.

"GLE Coupe" is a new model.
On some matters yes, but the NEW GLE SUV ISN't the same size as the outgoing ML.

Most dimensions are the same and others are within a few mms due to panel changes as part of its facelift.

That's the point - it isn't new. The ML is simply changing its name to GLE and getting a slight facelift.

A quick edit saved you there.

The dimensions aren't the same but only a teensy bit different.

Anyway, MB Milton Keynes are going to get me in a GLE COUPE, the diesel version and i'll report back.

It really did look FANTASTIC in the showroom and i can see a lot of people getting them especially if mercedes put out some decent lease deals as they often do.

Palladium silver, black leather and the premium luxury pack would be my choice. If i could get that for 6 months down and £500 a month i'd be a happy man.

I think the first time I looked I looked at the same image twice!

They've done things like changed the mirror sizes and added the tow-bar to the GLE's length.

Not sure why I got into this. smile I think I was just dismayed that when I wandered around the showroom everything looked weird / insane - like an S Coupe (I didn't know there was such a thing) at £100K with seats that were a £6K option.

I didn't get the CLA at all. A45 AMG was tiny inside.

I was quite looking forward to GLK but GLC looks like a Honda CRV or something Korean.

I remember not that many years ago when a new car was launched about once every five years, heralded by huge publicity and it looked totally different to any previous model.

Now cars are updated almost yearly it seems, new bumpers, grilles, mirrors etc so they can put it out as a new mode or Model year. Then you have the variants etc.

After Mercedes yesterday i went to the BMW showroom where the choice seemed even crazier, every niche catered for. I want a medium size saloon. CHECK 4 wheel drive CHECK. Auto. CHECK. Hatchback though. CHECK. Diesel. CHECK. Every niche was there in all its glory.

Bewildering in many ways.

What happened to saloon or estate sir?

Bloody ell Palmy, you haven't even got your "new" car yet before another new one is on the way!
I'll defend you on the fast SUV front. Like you we went from the grunty ML to the grunty E and I don't miss the big old buss in many respects but can't fault the E really. I'm just still annoyed Merc dumped the twin turbo diesel unit - it's a monster smile

Ha, well this is actually the other half's car. Bless, she doesn't know what she'll be driving from one week to the next. But she'll not see it until the GT comes along....just 4 weeks to go bounce

Snap. Except she strangely enough is quite to steal the keys to my car when she is so inclined...

Like it. I suspect there will be a significant slice of the motoring public who will take driving near it as only mildly less offensive than you goosing their mum. laugh

Biggest fk you of a car since the launch of the X6.

Ha, yes ours is the first customer GLE63 on the road in this country (and will probably remain as such for a little while) so other people look a bit perplexed because it's new, it's bloody huge and, err, unique looking. It's definitely a marmite car and is probably being recognised as the Jurassic Park car given Merc appeared to have paid for that whole film!

We picked the car up on Saturday and immediately, within a few hundred yards of the dealer, I just knew......this car is something really special. I absolutely love it - it's like the ML but feels different in a number of ways. For instance, the view out is like nothing else - you actually sit higher than in the ML but the roofline is lower so it has a unique feel. The quality....simply wow. Rock solid and very rich material quality.

This is potentially my favourite car to date - let's see if that's the case in a months time but then I loved our ML63 (I had that forever by my standards) so it bodes well. I wonder whether as a day to day car I end up preferring this truck to the GT (obviously once over the GT's honeymoon period).

I'll share a few notes on how it drives in the next week or so but suffice to say that I'm like a big kid with the numerous surprise and delight features it has - it's full of gadgets that I've never had before, don't need now but are good fun nonetheless. One of my favourites is the Mercedes star projection from the wing mirrors at night.

I also like the ambient lighting and how it flows across the dash

Ambient lighting is cool. Love it driving mine at night.

The star projection thing though? Maybe in Hong Kong or Shanghai. Even in London thats looking a bit dickish :P

Anyway "forever" for you basically means next month smile

Nice one OP. I saw the first of the production models of these on display in Geneva this year, and me and my dad instantly fell in love with it even in the very 'Typical Mercedes' Silver it was in.

Also saw Jurrasic world when it was realeased and was chuffed to see it on screen, I think it looks fantastic and I bet it goes just as well. The gadgets and gizmo's finish the car off well! I wonder what will be the result when Brabus get their hands on it. I will say I think its one of those cars that just looks better in the flesh than it does on less flattering images.. same goes for the facelifted X6.

will keep an eye on this thread to hear about your thoughts on living with it!

I have to agree. What an amazing looking bit of exclusivity, but that projection is just not cool man!

Congrats on the car OP!

Fear not, the feature which so obviously tickled me can be switched off.
