Has anyone had experience of fitting snow/winter tyres to a G63?

If so, I'd be interested to hear more - make, size, performance etc.

I'm currently looking at Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow and the Pirelli Scorpion Winter - both of which seem to be available in the same size as the standard tyre (275/50/R20), but only in a lower load and speed rating (109H as opposed to 113W). I am assuming that the lower speed rating is ok (given the conditions of use) but am less sure about the implications of the load rating (I think it corresponds to 150 kilos less load).

Any thoughts/experience/advice much appreciated!

Not sure what year your G-class is or the summer wheel size but the spec according to the manual (US version) seems to suggest the same difference in ratings ratings, albeit MB seem to recommend 19" rims for the G63.

G 63 AMG
Summer tyres

Tyres
275/50 R20 113W XL

Wheels
9.5J x 20 H2 Wheel offset: 1.97 in (50 mm)

Winter tyres

Tyres
265/55 R19 109H M+S

Wheels
9.5J x 19 H2 Wheel offset: 1.97 in (50 mm)

The Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow is an excellent tyre. We used that same size and rating on our X164 GL, on 19", and also have the equivalent for the 20" recommended rim on our new X166 GL that replaced it.

On both of our GLs, we've used separate rims for the winter set and in both cases the recommended rim is 1" small than the normal summer set the car came with.

Thank you for the feedback.

My car is a 2015.

I was hoping to use the same wheels, without incurring the extra cost of buying 19 inch wheels!

I'm based in the UK and the price, just for the tyres, seems to vary from c.£450 to £275 per tyre - but that's for the lower load rating aa originally mentioned.

With the previous GL we were lucky in that I found someone selling a set of new 19" rims and who couldn't shift them - only cost me £400 for the set!

Annoyingly the new GL can't take 19" rims due to the brake size so we had to source them new (ouch!). Even more annoying is that we bought five new tyres (including a spare) for the old GL only a few months before we decided to change to the new GL! Hoping for some good snowfall this year to encourage someone to buy our old set on ebay! wink

I tend to source my tyres from mytyres.co.uk although I've used out local KwikFit on occasion, when they've been doing one of their four for the price of three tyres deals.

Was just going to post the same question. Ordering a new set of 20" for my G63 from Mercteil and will be fitting Pirelli Snow and Ice. Bought my G last week - loving it.

Congrats on the new purchase! In many ways a 'marmite' car; but if you 'get them' then they are truly addictive (I bought a G350 in Jan this year and then changed it a couple of months ago for a G63).

Do you know precisely the size (load etc.) of the Snow and Ice that you are going to fit? And the 2nd set of wheels, is that just to make it easier swapping over and preserve the orig wheels - or, did you fancy a change?

Enjoy the G!

@ v12, mine came with the silver diamond cut wheels and I prefer the look of the black alloys - that's the only reason for the change.

I have actually found an all season tyre that I am going to use. It's a Pirelli Scorpion Verde All Season 275/50/20 109 H. Now that I have found these I will use all year round and put the diamond cut alloys fitted with Dunlop summer tires for sale on eBay.

I finally located a set (last one?) of Pirelli Scorpion Winter via Selecta Tyre in Rugby (who were brilliant). The tires were delivered on Sunday and I hope to get them fitted by the weekend.

I have been used the Pirelli's for over 2 years now - perfect tire, no problems whatsoever.
