Late reply but.
I have a w221 2008 model S Class. I've also been in a 2016 w222.
In my opinion the exterior of my car is superior, I don't like the aesthetics Mercedes are applying to their new saloons. The coupé are lovely however. It is particularly awful how the S, E and S all follow such a close design and it is sometimes difficult to tell them apart on the approach. The S is still the best looking though.
The interior of the new S class is divine, I love the round vents and subtle wood, the seats are extremely comfortable for a passenger. The rear head rests are as comfortable as my bed pillows.
I'd say the new car seems a little quieter, ride seemed to be firmer though.
In all honesty it's hard to tell the difference apart from the interior design.
Very capable cars. Can't find a reason to sell mine. Ever.

I'm interested in the W221 S-class of 2011 vintage.
They seem great value for the the comfort and presence they have.
Would love to hear more stories on running these cars....just family duties for me!

I have said it before and I will say it again. They are not cheap to run - some say they are.
Depends how you look after them.
Last year I spent 2k and this year I had to spent around 1800 too. Front disks, pads and siezed calipers, major service required too. It all adds up. Its the parts that are expensive. Last year I have some suspension parts replacement, rear disks and pads, service again. alignmet check,20" tyres etc
In saying that I love mines in particular with the factory AMG kit and 20" alloys.
Comfort is epic, handling is very good for a big car, engine is very good and gearbox is slick on the move.
I have covered 32k in mine and never had an issue.
So spacious inside, you take it for granted when you need to go into the back with 2 kids inside a 3 series!!!
I am saying all this having had a F10 520d, 320i m sport, audi a8 '07, ML420, 730d '10, range rover '04
My business partner is selling one (listed on here http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/m...
I can vouch that it's absolutely superb - effectively brand new!

Mine is in the garage today (and yesterday)
Parts are hard to source and cost a fortune. I don't imagine this applies, but you can't run these cars on a budget. I was expecting a rise in running costs from my 330d, just not this much.
Brake caliper £200. Suspension arm £200. Brake pads £60.
