I've been meaning to add to this thread and I've just got back the the C class after a couple of months driving the Volvo automatic. The Volvo is so much better. Although it doesn't have any modes it just works well. The C class is either inert and hesitant or hyperactive and giving mechanically unsympathetic shifts. The previous 5 speed tiptronic was so much better, but I'd now probably miss the ultra high top gear.

I have had a couple of 7g's, I find them fine, even on my C320 I have now I used to jump from the X3 with the 8 speed into the Merc with the 7g and never really felt it was a bad 'box in any way.

I have the newer 7g+ in the E350 petrol and that is also fine, really nice 'box to be honest.

The 5 speed 722.6 I have had in loads too, last one was the ML that I only sold last summer, that felt pretty dated to me, was often slow to change up and really, really needed another gear at the top too.

I've currently got one of each, 7 speed in an e class and 5 speed in the R129. Best way I can describe it is the five speed makes it's mind up quicker but changes slower with the seven speed the opposite. Prefer the five speed but this may be due to the v8 in front of it.

Wife's 63 plate SLK 250 diesel has it and it's a great box. Sometimes stays in too high a gear on roundabouts which makes the car feel a wee bit less in control. Uses 4th/5th where I would go in in 3rd.
I sometimes just pull it into manual using paddles and drop that way.
