Good welding should make a repair as strong as the original - the trick here will be access as welding overhead in the boot is not going to be conducive to the best results, so the rear screen will probably need to come out, which will safeguard it against breakage. Perhaps bolting the belt mountings through the shelf into a full width channel spanning underneath the shelf would be a belt and braces approach?

I have been enjoying this thread very much. Some great machines here, as well as some very rare examples!
I may as well post my offering for this thread, together with a little history smile

My old 1991 W124 230E presented in Havannah Brown over Chinchilla lower trim and bumpers. It was specified in automatic gearbox form, with Sportline Chassis, leather steering wheel and gearknob, 4 electric windows and Blaupunkt Melbourne radio cassette and that was about it.
Originally the local main dealer's demonstrator, it was then owned by a local Baroness no less! My parents bought it at 18 months and 10k miles old, it became my brother's first car and passed to me when I started driving.
I became a statistic however, sadly writing off the car when I was 19 when it had just shy of 197,000 miles on clock paperbag
During my tenure I discovered the lovely coincidence that the car was first registered on my birthday! I certainly miss it.

Then I have my 1995 E320 Coupe with my parents' 1997 CL420.
The E320 has 5 previous owners, however I have owned it since March 2005 and 56k miles, Now with 127,500 miles, it is presented in Emerald Green Black Metallic with Mushroom leather interior.
It has the Carat Duchatelet bodykit and genuine 18" AMG Monoblock 2 alloy wheels. Not to everyone's taste, but I like it biggrin I bought the car with these modifications, and they are period.
I've given her a full Sportline Chassis conversion, including anti roll bar and steering box.
She was supplied with electric leather seats, climate control, electric windows, walnut trim. I have since added the Avantgarde grill, rear seat centre stowage box, illuminated varity mirriors, outside temperature gauge and auto dimming rear view mirror, plus an aftermarket wood & leather steering wheel.

The parents' CL420 was purchased in December 2000 when it has 20k miles. Now with 90k miles, it is presented in the same "189" shade of Emerald Green Black Metallic.
Originally owned by a company, driven only by owner's daughter, it was local to Suffolk before it was bought by my father.
It has mushroom leather, BOSE stereo with the original radio cassette and CD changer, wood & leather steering wheel, plus all the usual 140-series toys.
It is completely original, save for original 18" alloys having lost their diamond cut edge.

I like it too. Demands of work are in the way of cars at the moment... A couple of weeks and I'll have time. Then they'll all be sold.

Seeing as you are all displaying your C140s, here's mine. I became the second owner last week and it has a fantastically complete MB service history with it smile

An 80s/90 Merc issue of vital importance!

The front star on my 190e positively gleams in the sun. It's lovely to drive behind. The one on the w124 is dull in comparison. I have tried chrome cleaner with limited results. Do I need a new star, or is there some other "technique" to use in order to generate maximum shine?

And the one that gave me the Mercedes bug in the first place… fifteen years ago.

I’d been driving around in one of the last of the Rover Mini Coopers when a neighbour offered me a lift up the street in their E200 estate (T124). The road was littered with speed bumps and yet the Mercedes didn’t even seem to notice. Shortly afterwards I noticed another neighbour was parting with his W123 so a deal was struck and I had five years of happy motoring in the car. Along with being an everyday car, it did a loop around the coast of Ireland, went into the Scottish Highlands, got taken across the Swiss Alps, the Italian Lakes, the Cote d’Azure and over to Venice. A quick check online shows it hasn’t been taxed or insured since 2008 frown so sadly it doesn’t appear to be giving someone else the same pleasure it gave me.

Since then I have owned a Ponton Coupe, a 190c Fintail, a 230SL Pagoda, a 280SL Pagoda, an R129 Sl280, a W124 E320 coupe (still mine) and most recently the C140 S500 Coupe pictured in the post above. Every so often I have a dalliance with another marque and yet I always seem to come back to Mercedes. The S500 coupe has replaced a Bentley Arnage; it was a fraction of the price to buy, will cost significantly less to look after and with any luck wont break down as often as the Bentley did (about once a year).

I’ve done four, six and eight cylinder Mercedes but not yet a V12. I’m sure one day I will give in to the urge...

I too have colours nailed firmly to the Mercedes mast, but on occasion rue my single mindedness.
I'd love an early XJ, but know full well that ownership would not be as satisfying.

My 300-24 SL has had a good ride out today, it's solidity, growly exhaust and new wiper blade impressing me. I read an article in the press recently in which Bruno Sacco was interviewed. The SL it seems is the car of which he was most proud.

Love this level of quality....

Buy a new one from the dealer. They're cheap. A lot of the ones on Ebay are more expensive and fake. Fiddly to fit—there's a knack—but your man will do it in 20 seconds.

Loving the pictures chaps! The point about speed bumps is something I always notice when driving my R107 - especially those awful short and sharp ones you get in some car parks. My Range Rover shudders but you barely notice them in the Merc.

Thanks chaps I will investigate this week. Very surprised that they could be so cheap from a Merc dealer.
