As hinted in that merc forum post, it isn't just the GLC that does it. My CLA 4matic does exactly the same thing when turning a slow speed on lock. It's a mix of transmission wind and resulting tyre scrubbing. It was even referred to in a PH review of the c class I think.

Was sent it from my supplying dealer, is that meant to explain the loud knocking noise too ?

Maybe they are seeing an increase in the number of reported cases of 'tyre skipping' because a lot more GLCs are being delivered and not just because it is colder? I was seriously considering buying a GLC to join my G but would not want the hassle of constantly swapping tyres around. I've never had a problem with my Subaru or Jeep 4WD systems and this is clearly not just a tyre issue.

It is interesting to see the language used.

it states that it can provide an improvement. It doesn't say it will fix it, or make it go away, just that it can improve it. No guarantees.

There is no way I would have bought this vehicle if I knew that switching tyres was mandatory. We do not live in a climate that warrant that.

Who knew buying a Merc would be such a hassle. I'm really not sure what to do about my order now. Having been messed around for months waiting for parts I now have a delivery date of mid Mar. How common is the problem, is everyone with a 43 amg experiencing the issue?

What is the view of the people who are having the issue, would you have bought the car if you had known about it beforehand?

I ordered my GLC43 Coupe in December, but am still waiting on a build slot Keep getting the same reply from the dealer - you will know when we know, surely it can't take this long to get a confirmed build slot. Is anyone else in the same position?

Bit worried about this crabbing issue.....not sure whether to cancel the order.....

They are saying the fitment of winter tyres would only improve the condition and not entirely cure it.

I`ve asked if demo vehicles at present have been fitted with the Mercedes winter tyres as per the service memo, but they are still on factory fitted summers, doesn't really make sense does it and certainly not a "practising what you preach".??

The knocking noise / banging needs to be investigated further also, I personally cannot see how this is related to tyres and temperature.

I must stress that the supplying dealership and the sales person that sold me the car have been great so far.

The car will be booked into my local MB centre to have the annoying rattles fixed and the knocking looked at.

I ordered GLC 43 4Matic Estate from Drivethedeal in November with the following spec - Premium Plus Package; Night package, 21" AMG alloy wheels; Tow Bar rofl; Running Boards . Manufacturer OTR was £55,345 but Drivethedeal discount was £4,075.50 (OTR - £51,269.50). My local MB dealer got within £1,500 of that after a lot of haggling but said there was no profit and doubted the Drivethedeal price.

All fine tho and just waiting for a date but am now worried about the crabbing problem discussed above and on honestjohn website....was half thinking anyway of getting the GLE 43 Coupe for 10K extra...but it's built in Tuscaloosa, USA yuck and has a lead time of 4-5 months, which means it will definitely fall into the new road tax. May be I should stick with the GLC but I do like the big coupe.

To answer one of the questions; no if I had known this upfront I would most definitely not bought the car.

The investigation I had today was farcical. Nobody wanted a test drive, they already know they do that, they just did a visual inspection, and pointed the camera to a bulletin from Mercedes saying they recommend winter tyres and nothing is wrong. Amazingly they also handed me a letter by Mercedes UK who then confirmed their investigation (wow that was quick), told me it only happens at slow speeds and when cold (don't you hate it when someone who has never met you nor seen your car tells you what your issue is, especially when they get it wrong), and then continue to state that this is not a safety issue, and merely a comfort issue. Well at lest I've got it in black and white that Mercedes Benz UK thinks this matter is a comfort issue.

Brilliant so Mercedes Benz sells you a car, in my case about £55K, and think it is just a matter of a comfort issue. Really, seriously?

Sorry guys/girls. Those who have one on order, please do yourself a favour and cancel it now. I

Absolutely ridiculous.

And the letter I received. Make up your own minds, but I have enough of this denial.

We ordered in early December. Both 250d's.

Does anybody know if we can get a full refund on our deposits if we cancel the orders?

I would certainly expect so if you Mercedes can't guarantee you that you don't have this issue as that is not the car you would have bought.

So there saying that the knocking noise is normal and a feature of the car and to fit winter / cold weather tyres to help cure this ?

I still don't understand how they can diagnose the issue and then send a letter / service bulletin out and then not fit the correct tyres to there current demo cars so we could see the difference !...

I'd be interested to know if anyone has fitted the winter tyres and any aspects are different !

I'll also be taking this up further

We ordered ours in September, was due for delivery in a few weeks. We cancelled last week and there was no issue refunding our deposit.

My wife has a GL, it's two years old and obviously it's an old model now, but it does not crab, judder or scrabble the tyres at low speeds.

Looking at those videos it's the exact same judder that I used to get when running my Isuzu/Nissan pick up trucks in 4wd, something about the diffs winding up?

There's no way that could be described as normal 4wd behaviour, her GL doesn't do it, my Touareg doesn't do it, my Disco 4 didn't do it.

Clearly there's an issue with RHD cars, I'd be furious and I really really like the GLC43 but I wouldn't contemplate owning any 4wd that did this every time I needed to park it.
