That's absolutely shocking, they can't have signed the car off during development with that going on.

You'd have trouble accepting that from a £1500 snotter, they can't just fob people off.

Well this thread has slowed up... while the honest John and Facebook thread lights up.

As an aside: does anyone know how to make piston heads email you when a thread to which you have contributed has received new replies? I can't figure it.

Oh dear. Looks like they have a fundamental flaw across the range. The mind boggles really. But the bigger it is, the less likely they will address it probably.

I wonder if the lack of press cars, no real launch and the "competitive" pricing suggest that merc has been aware of the issue all along? Has anyone managed to get hold of some winter tyres to see if it makes a difference? Is anyone with a 43 not having the issue?

Strangely I had a go in a Alfa Giulia Cloverleaf this morning and the front wheels were skipping as I turned out of the dealership. Didn't notice it again on the test drive.

I am actually shocked at that.

Just been out in GLC43 with 19's.
Nothing odd to report on turning. Good luck cyber getting something sorted. If all else fails perhaps smaller wheels might be the answer?

Smaller wheels aren't acceptable to me - personally I didn't like the smaller wheels on that car as if I did I wouldn't have spent the extra from Mercedes option list for the 21" wheels.

I'm not doubting your integrity but something isn't making sense. Mercedes's formally documented stance is that they all do it, and that it is a characteristic of the car. Therefore if you've experienced one that doesn't do that would make it according to Mercedes's own comments an exception and faulty wink Something is just not right here. A little bit of this can happen under certain circumstances, but the extend with which this is happening is not right.

One the group of affected people we have a mixture of those from GLC220d with 18" to those with the GLC43 on 21" wheels/tyres. We've also been getting another report from Australia where lets face it at the moment the temperature rarely goes below 20 degrees Celsius.

I also have a GLC43 and have a huge problem with the crabbing. The car was primarily bought for my wife who is now refusing to drive it. I also got fobbed off by the dealer immediately after delivery mid Dec so will be going through the motions recommended by the Motor Ombudsman to return the car after finding out what the procedure is.

I guess I would have to give MB a chance to fix it within a defined time period?

For what it is worth, I have a GLC 43 fitted with winter tyres (Pirelli Scorpion runflats) on MB 19 inch wheels (square) and have the summer set (staggered) stashed in the garage (Michelin Latitude non-run flats). My main criteria was comfort, durability, cost and I happen to like the look of 19s. I've also had SUVs with low profile rubber in the past (2004 BMW X5 4.8iS) and never particularly liked that combo feeling it to be a bit too much style over substance. Lucky enough not to have any crabbing in the GLC.
However I have every sympathy with the posters who do have issues as MB pushed the 21s hard in the marketing to the extent that I actually struggled to find pictures for months of the standard 19s except on the configurator. I am also suspicious that MB have known about the issue for a while as I found it very odd that no press cars were available back in the Spring and when they did appear in the UK in August, they were all on 19s with Michelin non run-flats. At the time I was delighted - some decent pictures and reviews of the set up I ordered.I was expecting run-flats yet when my car turned up in November, it was on the Michelins. I think I now know why this all happened!
As far as I can see and MB admit, the issue is around sidewall flexibility so,clearly, the less sidewall the greater the issue. Run-flats with stiffer sidewall clearly exacerbate the issue (hence they've been dropped) and I suspect air suspension mitigates it (such that steel suspension with 20s may be as bad as air+ 21s).
I feel that MB is trying to confuse the issue with the winter tyres advice which has nothing to do with crabbing but is about grip. That is really quite disingenuous.
The simple fact, in my view, is that they have pushed the envelope too far with the low profile tyres/4matic combo, did not test it sufficiently and , having pushed it hard (in the interests of profit) have come a cropper.
Well done to JP and the other knowledgeable posters on here for raising it. You have every right to expect a non-crabbing car.
At the very least, MB should provide a set of winter rubber for you.

In order to resolve the problem they first need to acknowledge they have one...

Nice to see the story making the home page news on here.

Given the mixed experiences people have been reporting with the problem I thought I would go and have another test drive in the cold to see for myself. The car I drove was a 43 on 19" wheels, summer tyres and temp was around 1c.

I could feel and hear the juddering as soon as I pulled out of the parking space on about three quarter lock. I mentioned it to the salesman and he gave the company line about needing winter tyres. I Didn't feel it on the test drive, but it happened again when I got back to the dealership and was parking up even though the tyres must have been warm by that point. It wasn't particularly bad and nothing like the issues in the videos but it was annoying.

I have also spoken to my supplying dealer and asked for some assurance that it wouldn't effect the car I have ordered. Their response was that it would only happen on full lock and winter tyres would fix it.

I now feel like I have no choice but to cancel my order. I really like the car, it is great to drive (for a 4x4) nicely equipped, comfortable, spacious and well priced, but I can't get over Mercedes attitude to the issue. They have clearly known about it all along and to suggest fitting winter tyres is just insulting to owners and prospective customers. If they had come out and said they were going to fix it I would have kept the car, but with no acknowledgement of the issue I really don't want the hassle and I'm nervous of the impact on resale values.

All car companies make mistakes and all cars have issues, but this whole experience has really put me off Mercedes. Unfortunately I am struggling to find something else to get instead.

I'm glad that by us highlighting the issues that at least you had that choice. I truly wished I was given that choice before I bought this vehicle.

Yes thanks to everyone for highlighting the issues and especially to Cyber for the videos. I don't think I would have believed how bad it was without them.

It still amazes me that car companies think they can fob people off, thanks to the internet they really can't get away with stuff like that any more. I really hope they get a fix sorted out for you guys.
