Hi chaps
I've got a suspected dead battery on my 124 (repeated clicking from the engine bay when trying to crank, even with a jump pack attached!) so I want to replace it this weekend.

I've been Googling around for an hour or so now and haven't been able to find the dimensions for the battery. I don't keep the car at home so I can't just pop out and measure it. ECP list 2 battery sizes, 027 and 019. From memory I wouldn't have thought the larger 019 size would fit in the tray, but the cranking amps on the 027 seem too low compared to OEM spec. Is it the 019 and I'm remembering the size wrong?

Thanks.

According to the brochure, the spec is 12V/62Ah.

Bosch lists the CCA as 550.

This is quite a small battery. The car will accommodate a 12V/74Ah battery (because the diesels use one).

Ta. I have my Haynes manual here and found some other info online about OEM spec which tallies with that. But what I can't find is the actual dimensions of the thing...

The Merc parts catalogue lists two batteries for the w124 280E, 12v/62Ah and 12v/100Ah, part numbers A0009823008 and A0055412501 respectively. These correspond with Bosch 0 092 S40 050 (labelled S4005) and Bosch 0 092 S50 130 (labelled S5013). The smaller battery's dimensions are 242mm (l) x 175 (w) x 190 (h). The larger battery's dimensions are 353mm (l) x 175 (w) x 190 (h). The Bosch parts catalogue lists only the latter as appropriate for your car together with the following models:

S3008, (12V 70Ah 640A), 278 x 175 x 190
S4008, (12V 74Ah 680A), 278 x 175 x 190
S5A 08, (12V 70AH 760A), 278 x 175 x 190

See here, batteries becoming apparent when you click the "all" tab: https://www.bosch-automotive-catalog.com/en/intern...

I would be concerned about fitting the S5013 in the car, even if all of the catalogues suggest it fits. It also seems over-specified. It's not like your car is a diesel which will need serious starting power in the winter time. I would fit the Bosch S4008, not least because it matches the specification of the original upgraded battery but has higher CCA. Actually, I would probably get a battery from the main dealer: they are often quite competitive.

Amazing, that's great info, thanks! I'll give Merc a call, they've been good for other parts I've needed for the car in the past.

I don't use the car much these days (as is evident from the flat battery...) so I think I'll fit a cut-off switch too.
