You just have to stand beside the cars at tick over. The 250 sounds like a taxi and the 350 is silent.
Which is why I always sit inside mine whilst driving..... wink

Joking aside, the 4 cylinder diesel engines aren't the first word in refinement but what 4 cylinder diesel engine is? What Merc do seem to be good at on the E Class and CLS is minimising the intrusion inside the cabin from those engines.
I’ve got the older W211 E320. I was also looking at the W212 E250’s before I bought mind. What put me off was a taxi ride in an E250.
‘Not the last word in refinement’ doesn’t come close. It was the most unrefined diesel I’ve been in since Ford launched the first DI engine in the transit in the early 90’s. Even at motorway speeds it was noisy. I’ve had plenty of 4 pot diesels too, so I know what they are capable of.
I gather the E220’s are smoother for some reason.

However, the V6 is something else entirely and suits the character of the car a whole lot better.
Economy though is not great, average 36 all in, 25-27 around town but 40-42 can be achieved on a steady motorway run.
Maybe the E350’s are better though.
