After years of thinking about it I am very close to purchasing a C63 AMG as it finally falls within budget (25-30k). I was initially thinking of going diesel but was inspired when a mate suddenly bought a V8 Porsche SUV. I just needed an exciting car back in my life.

Not many examples nearby within budget but I am currently looking at this one : http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/m...

Usual questions I guess in regards to maintenance costs and service intervals. Also is there anything to look out for a higher mileage car? i.e. any major costs expected at around 60k miles?

edit: Forgot to add it's definitely the saloon I'm looking for not the coupe.

For your budget you should be able to get a car with the head bolt modification (engine numbers finishing 60658 and beyond). These are late 2010 onward. Pre mod cars may well be fine, but for peace of mind I wanted a later one.

I'd say that car is a bit over priced, mine (bought last month) was a touch under 25k for a 2010 post headbolt car with near identical spec and 37k, admittedly from a small garage in the back of beyond.

You'll get to know your local tyre dealer* and petrol station VERY well, but enjoy, they are fantastic cars.

*averaged about 3-5k miles a set and 15-18mpg on minebiggrin

If your budget is 30k you can easily afford a facelift 2012 on car. They have a massively improved interior and gearbox as well as some significant suspension changes that made the car a proper m3 competitor rather than just battering it with noise and pace. The facelift cars really handle.

I'm 1 year into ownership of my 507 edition, the car is 18 months old. I love the thing...I mean LOVE it. I've covered 10k in the year and done 8 track days with the car. It needed new tyres due to an airfield day and new pads due to the old ones failing after Silverstone but otherwise it's been cheap (ish) to run. MPG combined is 19.6 but on track it drops to 8.4 but I couldn't care less smile I've covered 500 miles in a day without feeling it and topped 165mph on the autobahn with no sign of it slowing down, the thing is just an iron fist in a silky glove.

It depends on your driving style but I think for me tyres will last over a year easily (£550 for a full set of AD08Rs if you know where to look) and I'll go through another set of pads before the discs are done, I'd say 8 months for pads as it's a heavy car to stop on track. Pads will cost you around £500 and discs around £1500 but I'm going to upgrade to proper 2 piece items when the discs die which will bring that price right down in future.

Cheers all for the feedback. Sorry I missed the sticky will have a good read.

C63 is an itch I always wanted to scratch. Fortunate enough to have owned briefly the E92 M3 Comp Pack.
I was originally thinking about diesel but on the other hand life's to short and cars really do make me happy (when they don't break down wink).

I'm hoping for a facelift too and so far can't seem to find one close enough to me (Northants) and within budget.

Need to step up my search, just heard mates Cayenne S and it sounds brutal!

Should be able to cover the consumables just want something that I will look forward to on the early start and 3 hour commutes.

Okay so found this fairly local to me : http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/m...

Low miles but looks like pre-facelift and pretty low specced? Any comments?

Not much detail. Go take a look. I had the head bolt failure on mine. Bill was £3k but was picked up by the supplying garage. If you buy from a Mercedes dealer you will get 2 years warranty and some other stuff like servicing, breakdown cover and mot thrown in. Price looks steep for a pre-face lift but weigh up the whole package.

Trust me, buy a post-facelift. Changes were not limited to the interior - it's a completely different car.

I echo this. Had a pre and post facelift - the post facelift was a nicer place to be, handled better and made a great car even better. I wish I still had it. frown

This is not to say the pre-facelift is a bad car - far from it. But if you're looking to spend that amount of cash, I know where my money would be going.

The only thing that annoyed me about my facelift car was the creaking dashboard trim. Look out for that on a test drive.

Nodding to that here yes Got myself some hi-tech lubricant spray the dealers use.

Thanks all. Personally I like the front end of the facelift more as well, however all the examples I've came across are over £29k which is really the top end of budget.

I've also did some research on another itch I wanted to scratch (C6 RS6 Avant) but does look like the running costs is quite costly and warranty is definitely recommended due to 2 common major faults which is costly to rectify.

Would you also recommend a warranty if I go for a facelifted car? Other than fuel and tyres are there any common faults that's costly to repair?

Regarding service intervals is it every 10k?

I had no problems whatsoever, apart from a faulty GPS antenna in the 3 years I owned both variants. This was fixed outside of warranty and cost about 100-200 quid, if I recall. It's been the most reliable car I've owned. Generally they're pretty reliable motors, from what I can gather.

But it's a warranty - you pays your money, you takes your choice.

Servicing if I recall is every 15K, or one year. The amount of £££ varies depending on the service required - just oil, or extras like brake fluid, gearbox oil soon increase it.

Is that right? Mercedes used warranty is 2 years?
Only ask as I'm considering one of these or an M3 next and that's a big + for me if it's correct.

Was 100% the case when I was looking from last summer until this spring if purchased from main merc dealer.

There was something about 3 free MOTs too as long as you keep to servicing it at Merc too. I'm pretty sure first two services were free too and 2 years breakdown cover.

I'm considering one of these middle of next year, I've seen plenty on eBay at the moment. What's the opinion on the estate version?

I bought my 2014 C63 From Mercedes Warrington (Inchcape).

it came with a year's used approved warranty but also has a years manufacturers warranty anyway, so they both run along side eachother.

wasnt given the opportunity to extend my warranty.. i think the two years on used cars was for a limited time and i assume from selected dealers only?

Will be interesting to see how much a warranty extension will be when my manufacturers warranty runs out..

I've got the estate. I guess it's all down to opinion. But the boot space is quite a bit bigger than the w205 saloon I rented the last few days. Some say the estate has a less chavy image. I have two friends with coupes and they're far from chavy or anti-social drivers. The estate comes with the motorised boot lid which may seem a gimmick but it is handy.

Cheers, I was considering estate for its load capacity. I spotted a saloon today in black, looked very nice.
