C220 CDI Estate. Powerful enough?
Discussion
I need an economical big car. The VXR vectra is costing a fortune to run, and the ride is too hard. It's also not without its faults.
Looking at an auto c220, 11/12 plate area (facelift), sub 15 grand, sub 50k miles.
Any good? A shame there's no dab radio, but looking at the sport version, which comes with nav, xenons, electric boot etc.
Is the 220 engine enough to shovel you along? ideally I'd prefer a 330d but cant find one within budget which is decent. I'm also unsure about the giant merc badge on the grill. It's something I cant unsee :/

I had the 177bhp C220 with the 7 speed suto
I ran a C220 Coupe for18mths and loved it, drove it across Europe and it's no slow coach and if you put it in S it's even better
but I have moved on to e C350 CDi but the C220 or C250 are more then capable cars to put a smile on your face

I have a pre-facelift 220 auto estate, had it about 2 years. Came from an e46 328 before that. It does have a decent amount of forward thrust. The 5 speed box in mine is a bit slow sometimes in 1st and 2nd but once you get moving with the turbo spooled you can make decent progress.
I would buy the same car again but would look out for a 7 speed with the posh stereo.

If you are coming from a vectra vxr you will find it slow.
I took a 2010 C250 estate for a test when I had a vectra elite (the 2.8T) and performance felt just about adequate. Once up to speed on a motorway slog that doesn't really matter.
Lovely car in every other respect, so if you can accept you won't be burning up the road you'll be fine.

It's great, plenty of torque. I did quite a few Piston Heads drives over the North Yorkshire Moors in mine and kept up with them no matter what speed they were pushing.
If you are worried then go for the 250. Slightly better resale value and the MPG isn't affected too much either. I would also definitely recommend the AMG Sport Plus model. My C220 Estate was probably the best overall car I have owned to date, I only sold it to get a CLS63.
