Hi I have a cl500 2004 and would like a bit more V8 rumble without huge expense, has anyone removed the cats and if so has or will this improve sound and cause any running issues or is it safe to do so, understand when it comes to MOT there will be issues re emissions but do hope to fit some sort of performance exhaust in the near future, the SL55 Kompressor is a dream to listen to, can this be achieved with a non supercharged car? Any advice/info very welcome

If it's anything like my old CLK55, getting a customised backbox from the likes of Powerflow will make a difference.

Had a V8 Maserati 4200, I just removed the rear silencer, replaced with straight through end pipes, that was plenty to release the V8 growl

Leave the main Cats in then remove the secondary ones & add an X-Pipe & you'll have a nice deep note.

Get rid of the resonators, located between the cat and backbox.

Or http://www.ebay.de/itm/Mercedes-CL-W215-Supersport... or similar, you would need to cut the back bumper to fit.

I done a secondary decat on my CLS500 as it was way too quiet for a V8 for my liking. It didn't sound that much difference at first but having clocked up a few hundred miles on it since, I can now say it sounds awesome. Cost me £180 and that included a X section

Thought about this for my CL500. There is a company on the 'bay who supply and fit the X pipes for £500. That would be my choice. Their web site has a number of videos of various V8 Mercs they have worked on. They sound great.

+1
I have an E500 with a Powerflow exhaust including x-pipe. Cost me £500 from x-pipe to tailpipes.
One benefit is if you find it too loud or quiet they can swap a few bits around for a smallish fee. Better than dropping 3k on an AMG exhaust and finding you don't like it.
