Another quick win on steering is to replace the idler arm bushes. About £30 and 15 mins.

Single best steering improvement has come from replacing the steering damper - removed all vagueness and is now much more positive.

Chaps - I'm tempted to get these done. Any idea how much the whole of the work is likely to cost at my local £50 p/h indy?

I'd be surprised if he wanted more than £125. The steering damper is £40 and two nuts. The idler bush is £30 and one nut but it is a little less accessible and requires a bit more writhing on.

£125 for some writhing seems pretty good value!

The accumulated benefit of a number of small jobs such as that makes such a difference, and doesn't really drain the wallet at all. Well done.

So i'm told the rear screen is NLA from MB, by 2 different sources, Edward Hall and MercedesMark

Bit of time this afternoon researching, suggests Pilkington offer a replacement rear screen, circa 280 Euros, plus shipping (quoted via a german parts reseller https://www.originparts.de/?lang=1 )

"Pilkington have stock of this windscreen for MERCEDES 280-500 SEC W126 CPE 10/81-02/92; GREEN HEATED; OE PART NR.: A1266701680.
Item price will be 285,50 Euro ex works. Delivery time to us is approx. 5-7 working days."

Have emailed Pilkington UK to confirm - somewhat mad at myself for passing on a minty genuine used item earlier this year thinking they were still available from MB.

ETA - these guys also do one, but don't deliver outside of Austria

Strange that you've got nets, whilst i have pockets - assuming pockets were options (along with everything else back then)

Pleated pockets replaced nets at the mini facelift in late 1988, the same time that the seat and door card fluting changed on cars with leather upholstery and the 420 and 500 received the high compression engines. Nets or pockets, they were standard on UK models.

Edit: the same change (nets to pockets) occurred on other models, too, although on some cars (the w201 and 4-cylinder w124s) seat back storage was optional.

Not wanting to be a pedant, but the high compression engines came slightly earlier than the upholstery changes.

Got another 3 injectors done today before bad light stopped play for the final one - 2 of 3 also rounded out allen heads due to being unbelievably tight.

Not to worry, once i had bent back the old brackets for access, these came in very handy and they came off in seconds:

Wasn't expecting them to work on round heads, worked a treat smile

In other news, I started replacing the injectors on my 162k mile 560 with the parts below. No real reason too, i just recalled changing injectors on my old 190e 2.6 and it having a nice improvement in throttle response and pickup.

Injectors: A0000785823 / Bosch 0437502054
O rings: A0099971048
Injector holders: A1170700455
injector seal : A1160700077
injector bracket: A1160700740

I say 'started' as i had real struggle removing the injector hold down clamp bolts on both sides. Managed to do one side (just about got away with one of them), but rounded out one of the 5mm allen hex bolts on the NS bank. Spec is 10nM for these bolts, i must have been applying 5 times than when it rounded out. Lots of Rost Off in use before hand too.

Have also tried hammering home a torx bit, but that just ended up slipping too, so will need to get it drilled out and maybe re-tapped. Can't tell if they've been removed before - the injectors i did remove on the OS bank all had 'Made in Germany' on them (should be West Germany?), made me think they've been changed before.

Also, the Injector holders did not budge on mine, so have left the originals in place. I'd heard they can be pulled out with the injectors, mine seemed quite happy where they were, so both they and the o-rings were not used.

Finally done after some late resistance from one of the fuel distributor lines - care needed due to the aluminium threads.

Also changed hoses 266 and 242 In the link below

http://mercedes.7zap.com/en/eu/fg/car/560/560+sec/...

These were rock hard and I imagine not offering any sealing whatsoever at the injector holders:

It definitely idles better, and pickup in the 1-3K range has definitely improved, really quite a lot better so a worthwhile exercise IMO.

Forgot to mention will get the mixture setup on the gas analyser to account for the new injectors. Also have a replacement hose that goes from air filter housing to valve cover.

Bit of sensor(y) therapy today and replaced:

Thermovalve x1 (should have been x2 but fat fingered the order)
Coolant temp sensor x1
Coolant gauge sender x1
Rocker cover to air box hose x1

Previously, the temp gauge didn't rise above 70, even after being stuck in traffic (midway between 80 and lower mark) - after changing the gauge sender, it now sits as below after a good run, does this look about right?
