Do you plan on taking the car to that specialist for the work? How much notice do you need to give to get stuff booked-in?

Door seals are available - circa £200 per side for genuine items

A 126 720 03 78 WEATHERSTRIP LEFT FRONT DOOR
A 126 720 04 78 WEATHERSTRIP RIGHT FRONT DOOR

A few useful links to get part numbers:

EPC equivalent - http://mercedes.7zap.com/en/eu/fg/car/560/560+sec/...

Genuine Auto Parts - *most* prices are 20% cheaper than main dealer - drop the prefix letter when searching part by part number, numbers only, no spaces
http://www.genuineautoparts.com/uk/auto-parts/1989...

Worth comparing to Inchcape - remember to include the pre-fix letter, no spaces:

Yes, thats the plan, hopefully in a few weeks, although i'm wary of scope creep and receiving a huge bill over Xmas!

Currently operating on a 2-3 week lead time, guess this depends on whether they need the car to be on a lift or not

Cornershop - have you managed to source a bonnet pad? I've just e-mailed one of the e-bay vendors, but have struggled to find the right one so far. I haven't tried any of the proper part number searches yet.

The good news; exactly the sort of help I was hoping for with this thread. Thank you.

The bad news; £69 plus £12 delivery. Crikey. The Febi version for the W126 (different bonnet) is half that.

Maybe overkill however I try to use genuine MB items where rubber is involved.

I'll probably do that for the seals, but for a piece of foam that I'll rarely see I think I'll be a cheap-skate!

Checking in to compliment CDG on a very handsome SEC and as a reminder to post some details on the story, condition and slow refurbishment of mine.

Cornershop, are both suppliers with links above, supplying genuine MB branded parts?

Yes, GAP only deal in genuine parts, all come in sealed Mb bags.

Worth emailing them before with part numbers to check the parts are available, as some have been NLA in my experience. Inchcape is a main dealer franchise, so again, genuine MB parts only.

I've used GAP for parts for mine, usually at a reasonable discount to what my local dealer can do.

On the battery tray mine had this issue as well and has been replaced, part of the problem I think may be the location of the washer bottle next to the battery.

Went to the NEC on Saturday and picked up a brochure from SL Shop.

They're offering a 6spd manual conversion for the w126 at a soupçon under 12k - I can't imagine what a manual SEC would be like or how many owners would go for it.

They're also offering a bigger rear ARB setup at £650-ish - something I may investigate to remove some of the boat like cornering characteristics of the standard setup, without creating a harsher ride with lowered springs/shocks.

Interesting. I'm a big manual transmission devotee in general but not sure how well it would suit the 126. In general I don't like manual transmission in the absence of a normal hand-brake.

If the 6spd was combined with engine mods it could make for quite a hammer.

Presumably much of what they have done to the m103 in their Sportline offer could be done to a 117: ported and flowed heads, performance manifold, hot cams, fancy fuel injection. 400bhp in a manual SEC might be quite something. They're not as heavy as they look.

I'm yet to be convinced that an increase in power and torque over and above full-fat Euro 560 spec is a good idea on a 126 coupe unless some increase in torsional rigidity can be contrived. The pillarless design is super elegant but does raise structural questions (which, rightly or wrongly, I've heard described as the root cause of the rear screen delamination / parcel shelf rust combo - flexing of the shell letting water past the seals).

However, with a six speed manual you would get a substantial uplift in performance and economy without increasing power or torque, so that might be enough to make a 560 or a late 265 hp 500 lots of fun.

Best of all to drive (though not as swoopy) might be the six-speed and one of the more powerful engines in the stronger, lighter SWB SE saloon shell.

Good score OP. Cracking cars, had three of them. Posted about these before, but ...

The first was an early 380SEC in about 2001. A mate phoned who worked in Brick Lane. His bosses car had been vandalised. He just wanted it gone. Free if I go quickly. I went quickly.
Needed glass, an ignition barrel and a few other minor cosmetic things. Also needed two engine tappets, as they were NOISY. I never replaced the grill, as it was just too much money. Converted it to LPG, and did many miles in that car

Pretty much as found:

Back on the road

But then I ruined it

The car lives on, and is now on airbags somewhere up north.

Next was a LHD 420SEC. Would have been in about 2003 ish. Black/black - rather rare now - so wish I still had this car! Interior was mint. No rust. None.

I bought it with the front corner a bit bent for £1500. Sigh.

Fixed it up into this

LPG'd it, polished the Aero 1's, enjoyed it for a while, but it just kept getting stopped and searched by the Police. I am a computer boffin, not a drug dealer, but I was getting stopped with ridiculous regularity. They told me the car was not on any lists, and it was always random searches. But it put me off driving it in the end, so I sold it to a friend who killed the gearbox within a month a scrapped it! I was so pissed off with him.
Totally regret selling this car. I doubt it would be stopped regularly these days. Being as it so clean, it would be worth loads now!

Finally, I got offered another vandalised car in 2006, this time a late 560SEC. £1000. Yes please!

Broken windows, door handles destroyed, interior trashed, and they'd tried to get into the boot with a crowbar

I spent a lot of money on this one...

And it looked amazing when complete

It was quite a quick car - and it had a factory LSD, so was fun to be irresponsible in.

Of course, I then ruined it

It got badly keyed in the end and I lost interest in it. Sold it on without the hydraulics. I heard it still exists a year or so ago, but was now in someones garden and hadn't moved for several years.

Of course they have gone up in value exponentially these days. Would love another 560 as a weekend toy, but they are just too much money now. Preferably black/black. Maybe another damaged one will come up one day, or a back advert, as per the OP. Wouldn't bugger about with it much these days though. They are not throw away cars any more.
