Ive owned this for about 3 months now, absolutely brilliant. As others have said brutal power delivery in a very good all round car. Very practical, still looks great in my opinion and not that shocking for parts prices (compared to newer models anyway!)

I'd have loved a black one....was this one on eBay recently?

It was on before at more money, I think the mods are putting people off, I think most buyers want standard, clean cars with good history an as lower miles as poss.

There is a tidy looking one on MBclub, black saloon but its got a 77 mm pulley on, now I am not averse to some engine mods but isnt a 77mm pulley pretty hardcore and requires additional supporting mods like higher rate injectors, ecu map, additional cooling and possibly other stuff to keep intake temps down ?

Saw one with a mention of using oil, wasnt for sale but is that a feature of these engines that they use a bit, my CLS doesnt really use any.

That list of mods is exactly what I would be wanting to do with my E55! Exhaust, wheels, diffuser and front lip........in this instance is it better to stay away from that sort of advert because of just the mileage alone? Or is there something else that would put others off from going for it? Let me know!

I dont think mileage is a problem on 55 engined cars that have been looked after and arent rusty, that ad reads like they guy is an enthusiast of sorts, I think people are staying away as it isnt original, probably a half decent car but for me would need to lose the tints and go back to a standard, or very near it ride height.

Anyone got a very high mileage 55 engined car ?

Do they have problems with the oily bits of the engine ? the issues seem to be around electronics, bit of rust on some, charge pumps, rocker gaskets, airmatic and general suspension issues and SBC.

That's the kind of E55 I'd buy, the engine won't be an issue yes the mileage would make me go looking for receipts mainly for the reason that the SBC & the suspension issues. The rocker covers always tend to leak.

Having come from a C5 RS6, a few E39 M5s, a B5 RS4, and a W210 E55 AMG Estate the W211 sits at the top of the pile for me. I particularly wanted a 55k over an E63 because the power delivery is more involving. I rate it the engine as the best I've ever experienced. There is of course also the huge potential for power upgrades as discussed. MSL seem to have a very good rep, I spoke to them last week and for £800 they can increase to around 540bhp. It's just hard to justify when it already makes your eyeballs bleed!

Where abouts in the uk are you based? Im in the north west and would really appreciate some time around an e55 and to learn anything that you have through the buying process!

540 is optimistic, more like 525-30 with filters. Had mine remapped and can thoroughly recommend it. Maybe not much more bhp, but it's delivered slightly differently and there's a lump more torque. Utterly fantastic engine.

Hi

Im afraid im in Essex! Only advice really is to take someone with you that knows about them. Generally you can spot a well looked after car from a ropey one quite quickly I think. If your down this way at all im more than happy to take you for a spin!

What do they make as standard, have seen 469, 476, 493 and 500 ?

I read that Mercedes play down the output from 493 like in the SL55 to 476 so as to not overshadow the more expensive SL, but in actual fact they are exactly the same unit, int he same level of tune ?

In my CLS today, still feels quick, I suspect the AMG will be outright quicker, obviously as it is more powerful but subjectively, it will feel a lot quicker, a lot of the time, I mean less need for the box to shift down and will feel like it is a completely different animal, but on a quarter mile drag, it will be maybe a second faster, low thirteens compared to low 12s or will it be more ?

Well my NA '63 was an '08 model, so I think it was 507 bhp standard.

I've heard this about various AMGs, some say power is up, some say down. What I know for sure is the map I was offered for my '13 E63 was quoted as giving roughly 625 bhp and 725 lb/ft on the standard twin turbo 549 bhp engine. This it did, suggesting the engine came from the factory pretty close to the 549 bhp quoted by MB. I can post the dyno graph if you'd like?

I think the 1/4 for mine was 12.5, FL gives the 1/4 for the CLS500 as 13.9. But the 0-100 is where you'll really feel the difference: '08 '63 is 9.7s, CLS500 is 13.3s. So yes the E63 will feel a great deal quicker, certainly to 100!

Talking 55 engines, 63's are out of my price range, 55's probably are but hey ho.

C and D managed 13.3 but have seen other times quoted as 13.9 and 13.8, no hard and fast figure as so many factors, its 13. something where the E55 is late elevens on occasion to early 12's, ergo, it is faster and the power deliver/noise will make it feel more so.

Ah, got you. According to Fastest Laps the E55 gets to 100 in 9.4s, and does the 1/4 in 12.4. That's a very fast car!

What i love about the 55 engine is you get that first thump of acceleration when you first put your foot down which you expect to ease off but then it just carries on surging forwards with such aggression your well into big numbers before you realise. Fantastic engine, mine has Eisenman rear boxes and sounds just perfect especially with the faint supercharger hum in the back ground!

Yours is lovely, do you mind giving an indication of how much you paid, ball park figure ? if not dont worry, just trying to gauge what they actually go for, lot of overpriced stuff out there.
