Keyless go issue

Last night I jumped out of the car pressed the lock button all good. Get to the front door oh where's my keys?

That's right on the front seat.

Won't unlock.

Had to wake up the Mrs (not happy)

Get the spare key to get my keys back.

I didn't think it should lock if the keys were in that car?

It shouldn't as far as my experience goes - if I leave the keys on the car and try to lock it with the door handle sensor then it shows a "keys in the car" message on the dash and won't lock (W221 S Class)
