Yes i am looking forward to seeing it in the Yorkshire sun today but dreading the drive on the M62 - The CLS has a problem with balance over illegal speeds and it keeps reminding me to get it fixed when Im on a motorway blast.

I really hope this is the one - I have seen over 10 now and was so disappointed with the Obs / Hel T reg it nearly put me off alltogether.

If this is honest and in decent nick its on a trailer back to the Wirral today I have even had a radiator fitted in the garage (the moosus went nuts) in anticipation of those cold nights perfecting my new charge.

Hopefully a kindly expert will explain the "rolled arches" body mod as the VIN search asked more questions than it answered

Rolled arches/shell modification is good. It is a very minor modification to the inside of the wheel arch necessary to accommodate the enormous AMG wheels. Essentially the inner lip of the wheel arch is "rolled" or pushed back in on itself to give an extra 5mm or so of clearance in the wheelarch. This is the proper way of doing it and if it is done at the factory, so much the better.

Many people buy after market large wheels and do not have this modification carried out, with risk of rubbing. However, I think the risk probably only materialises in the most extreme circumstances.

The modification is invisible from outside the car: the wheelarches are not flared or extended or anything like that.

Be aware that these wheels are almost £1,000 each from the dealer!

The assymetrical lights for L.H. traffic are headlamps with the correct lenses for the UK where we drive on the left. If they are xenon lamps, they can be set to the continental setting with the flick of a switch in the lamp assembly: very convenient for holidays abroad.

Emerald green/black metallic is a lovely colour.

668 is packaging for shipping
793 refers to the 18" AMG wheels
833 is Great Britain, additional parts

Sadly it had a pass side boot well with very damp carpet and tools - seller thopught it was as a result of jetwashing but its a risk Im not sure I want to take.

Otherwise it was honest in that all was ok but the door trims I am finding are very fragile they looked knackered certainly not up to Merc standards is it a known weak point ?

Im still looking..... may ditch the pan roof requirement and just insist on deep dish and service history

RESULT (sort of) - decided to have a look at a car I had previously not considered because A, its 4 miles away and you always miss the bleeding obvious, B, The trader pic was really bad, C It has 16" wheels rolleyes and D No mention oof a pan roof

I get there and find a really dark met blue (need VIN to get colour) nearly black with mushroom. 68k Full inchcape service and maintenance log with all receipts showing £3k work in 18 months, Panoramic with mint blind, perfect door cards, no dings, the 16" ers are like new with nearly new Contis (shame to waste them) a really honest motor. Dealer was an RAC approved garage and was selling it for a friend who just happens to live right by me and was a high up at LFC (his wifes car)

As I am paranoid I asked for the RAC check and 12m tax thrown in and we have a deal - if the RAC check throws up anything it will be sent to Inchcape to be rectified and this amount deducted from the purchase price.

On that basis I have paid a £500 deposit pending RAC report and road test / hood test / gizmo test BUT its had little real use for its 10 years

Im sure its a straight six as its May 98 and it has a centre stop light, hardtop stand (listed on bill of sale), unmarked leather, MB mats, Pioneer hurl cd stacker (oh for an audio 10 or a Becker), felt cubby not cassette box, little red mini key imobiliser, tracker.

What made me realise it was a well looked after model was thge centre heater vents - it has the two plastic adjusters still in place - soooo many of the ones I have seen dont have them (no idea why)

I will (assuming it checks out) run the wheels for a while until I can get some AMG ii`s (everyone says they are for sale everywhere - can I find em LOL) on it and then after some TLC I will have the car I covet for under £10k and in a state of completeness and good condition (ness)

Next step is getting the VIN to ascertain the colour - will update

I got the above car 98 R 64k Its Green Black, Mushroom, 16" diddy wheels. £9500

RAC inspection wanted a aerial, windscreen chip fix, wheel bearing adjust only.

It has a gearbox thump under hard load from 2nd to 3rd and I am told this is fluid / MAF / Sticking valve so I collected it on thursday night (24th) drove 10 miles home (pulled to left a bit and gbox thump was not so bad) - took it into Indie Merc / BM dealer for A service plus ATF, Sparks, Gas recharge, Brake fluid and coolant change and handbrake adjust plus I asked them to go over the car and report anything. I get it back monday night pending the gbox fix being straightforward

After close inspection its very honest, the hardtop is mont but the owner has "missed" the rear mounts a bit and scratched the paint on one side and the plastic on the other - I have id`d the plastic shroud and will get one ordered. Small crease on nearside 3/4 that a dent man can sort and thats it - just needs a good clean and a few worn trim parts replaced.

Initial impressions of the drive (I normally drive a CLS55) are steering effort and accuracy as in lots of twirling and not much accuracy and painfully slow BUT that may be more due to the gbox and the fact I dont want to rag it until its been serviced etc - we shall see - I will ask if there is anything that can tighten up the steering (r/c ball on this IIRC)

Will update after its back
