Jumpy gauges on a W123
Discussion
I've taken the plunge and bought a 1982 W123, 280E in silver. The speedo needle jumps all over the place until I get to about 40mph and then it settles down, also the fuel gauge flicks between full, empty, half full, empty etc. despite the tank being topped up with petrol.
I think (and would like your thoughts) that a likely cause of this is something like a loose connection or grubby wiring. Anyone have any ideas, or am I on the right track?
Also, any suggestions for a good MB specialist in the North West?

My speedo developed a flickering motion and it greatly improved after I asked my Merc specialist to tighten the speed cable. I hasn't 100% resolved it though. I've been informed the only way to completely resolve the problem is to buy a new speedo.
I've never heard about the other dials flickering in these old Mercs, but maybe more cable tightening is in order?
A good specialist would be able to improve it for not too much money, I would think
Hope you get the problem sorted soon, so you can start enjoying your new purchase. Those W123s seem fantastic cars, especially in 280 guise

My 124 Coupe was serviced by Ian Walker at 124 Works (think its near Preston) before I bought it, its certainly in good nick and he gets a lot of recommendations on the MBClub forum. Believe he does other models as well.iluvmercs said:
