1950's Merc SL - Bringing her back to life (and up to date)
Discussion
Good to see the new addition is getting the thumbs up
Haha, I'm not sure about a fetish, but I think I better stop now before too many eyebrows are raised!
The SL will be a very special car indeed, and with prices still soaring (and all the hours that have gone into it) I think it'll become a show piece for events, euro tips and maybe some car shows?
I know from owning a 2 seater that its actually very hard to get any consistent use (unless you're single), there is always an extra bag, a friend, a child, or maybe just some 'car bits' to lug round or collect
So the point of this is to be the 'fun fall back car'. A rare car with four seats thats solid and made to well... and I love the back of these. Plus many of the parts and construction are the same as the SL, so all the things I have learnt can be put to good use.
Completely agree about the 'cab meets roller' in design. I'm thinking deep metallic blue with flat black roof + new chrome. As I say, that car will have to wait as I really want to try and get the SL down to classic lemans in the summer.

Forgot to mention that its a 220s (or maybe se) Mercedes from 1958. These cars are still pretty cheap (especially in this condition). I'm banking on the prices rising, but it doesnt matter either way.
Its got all the same signs as the SL's continued price rise, very expensive sister models (like the 220 cab and convertibles which are now big bucks) coupled with high resto costs... combined it means these will rot and die out, or go up in price (over time).

Nothing ground breaking on the car... but the mother of all benches has finally been born, stained and varnished.
18mm ply, 18mm chip + 2 by 4's all the way along. Its almost as over enginered as the SL.
The leather has turned up now too. Does anyone know a trimmer who doesnt charge the earth?

Glad you guys are still enjoying the (slow) progress.
Guess what I just took delivery of, its another 1958 Merc
I know this one isnt as popular as the SL, but I think it could be a pretty cool car all the same. I wont be spending much time or money on this one though... and I doubt I'll touch it for 6 months. What do we think?
A nice car with a lot of potential . Pontons are now quite rare cars and don't come up so often even in rough condition .Guess what I just took delivery of, its another 1958 Merc

I've had mine for a little over 30 years now , restored it in the early 1980's , but will need to do it over now .
The Fintail Series which came after the Pontons are also nice cars and mechanically similar .
