I collect this tomorrow morning so it's not technically mine yet although I've already paid for it.

It's a 14 plate C250 CDI AMG Sport Edition which is replacing my 93K mile 320d.

With a 2 year old I needed a bit more room on occasion and this has a bit more grunt than the BM (which was perfectly fine for 95% of the time). My first Merc and seems to be a great all round family car. They also seem to be better value than the equivalent 3 series touring.

Wheel colour change pics today: Matt Gunmetal. A bit different to the OEM black / diamond cut but I like it. New tyres fitted at the rear too. 275/30/19 MPSS.

2016 A200d, AMG Line, with Premium Plus & Night Packs.
7sp DCT Auto.

Had it 5 weeks now, and 3.5k on the clock. So nicely run in. Goes like the clappers for a 2.2D, quite impressed. Also managed 80mpg on a run from north London to Ascot last week, so super happy with that.

I think I definitely got the right colour combos :-)

Lovely colour combo. A friend of mine just bought one for work and the interior looks lovely.

Was that AMG badge on there as standard though..?

OK, so I don't intend to be a regular poster on here, but will provide an overview, primarily because I think its a friggin' awesome car!

My more recent car history has included an A6 3.0 Quattro, S60 Polestar, Maserati Granturismo 4.2 & 4.7 GranCabrio. I ended up with a V60 which was a soulless box, primarily because someone in the household bought a dog. I traded the S60 in which is one car trade that I really regret, if only for the Rebel blue paint / black alloy combo. I then gifted the V60 to her-indoors (soon to be ex - I think in part because of the Volvo trade, but I digress), and drove her Alfa Guilietta for a few months (which I quite enjoyed to be fair). I had a good long look at the M4 (this is last Apr/May), specced one up and thought ok, this is looking good. And then went for a test drive. I don't know what it was, but I couldn't get a connection to the M4 at all, it just didn't give me any inspiration, felt like it lacked something - including a decent exhaust noise (I appreciate others may disagree - but this is an 'opinion'. I'm sure the M4 was highly competent and a decent vehicle and of course has a long pedigree in various guises. I've no doubt it would've been a decent purchase, but when you're spending £60k+ on a car, you want to know it was the right choice. I also thought the dealership were disingenuous in their approach to sorting out an acceptable price, but I can get over that type of thing - its called 'life'.

So, having downed the car search tools for a couple of weeks, I ended up looking at second-hand E-class coupes petrol engines. I really wanted a petrol with some decent power for no precise reason other than I just did. I'd seen a couple on Autotrader and the like, so figured I'd visit my local Merc dealership (in Milton Keynes) and have a look before doing a 100 miles to view a couple I'd seen. The sales guy was a pretty decent guy and raised why the E-class and had I considered the C63 - No, too thirsty. Ah, but sir, have you seen the new one? Its much more reasonable...we have one here, by chance. This was early in June '15, so very new out, to the point the dealership had one demo model in dark metallic blue and a white one that had arrived the day before, unprepped in the corner of the showroom e.g. no wheel caps and not quite where it should've been - but heh... 2hrs later and after some stunning negotiation, I'd managed to get about £200 off because basically they knew they'd sell it within days. It was 95% of the spec I'd choose, the test drive was engaging, the car felt like it had a soul (this is a 'thing' for me) and given that or a 6mth wait, it was an easy choice. Indeed, compared to the M4, well there was just no comparison once I'd driven the C63. For me it was a good step ahead and I was much, much more taken by it.

After a few weeks I'd had a couple of problems with it which were ultimately put down to the set-up of the DCT. On a few occasions the power disappeared as the auto changed down as you were slowing right down to a junction. If the coast was clear and you wanted to power away before coming to a stop, I ended up sans-power and was almost t-boned on a couple of occasions. Two visits later - and the dealership were extremely good, replacement car on the driveway within 2hrs and insisted on giving me a couple of years of a service pack even though I'm not a compensation-seeking type - and we were all good. The service was better than I'd received anywhere else frankly, including the MD of the dealership making a point of coming to see me.

As to the car itself, unquestionably it is the best 'day to day' car that I've ever had. It cruises quietly and smoothly, extremely comfortable (people rave about Volvo seats, but these are better in my opinion), has practicality (better rear leg room than the V60 so I'm told) and a decent boot. The exhaust note is exceptional (a note on this, it sounds better than the loan C63 I had from the dealership - don't know why, even though the loan model had the optional exhaust button), has a quality feel all round, I even don't mind the stuck on iPad...! I have the black and red interior combination which is great - the loaner had black & white, but you wouldn't want the white seats - grubby in no time at all. Additionally it has 19" black wheels (and I like a bit of pimping frankly), the black pack trim around it which adds a little something extra - and overall is a lovely looking thing.

Power-wise, you sensibly couldn't want any more on the road. When you're in comfort mode it takes a moment to get the power as you'd expect with the change down, but not in a way that causes any issues when you're cruising on the motorway. But flick it into S or S+ (or my own set-up which utilises bits of both) then its there on tap. Yes, if you try hard you can lose it, but the car has helped me out on a couple of occasions by sensing where my capabilities ended! I tend to drive it more using the paddles and work it a little harder where the roads offer the opportunity, and I've never been disappointed - not least as you can get the exhaust popping a treat. Worth noting - which I didn't know when I bought it, as it was a v. new thing to the dealers and hadn't filtered down - but if you buy an AMG (as opposed to AMG line) you get a 3hr course at MB World of one-to-one tuition in an identical model car. This was not only good fun, but educational and I got to try the S version for an hour - another guy had the S but his review was that it just wasn't worth it on the road, having driven both. Finally, it gets a lot of thumbs up and looks - I'm not quite sure but I think its to do with the particular spec with the black pack and black wheels that make it stand out. I've only seen a couple of others on the road so far - one which was silver all over with silver alloys, I mean, use your imagination please! - and another dark blue metallic.

Overall, its a 9.5 out of 10 - I don't know what would get it the other 0.5, but frankly there's not a car on the road that I would prefer to have - although the new Alfa looks interesting (but could I spend £60k+ on an Alfa, with all the chance that it'd be worth £30k in a years time?).

Looking back, had I bought the M4 I know it would've been a mistake and I'd have looked to change it by now - quite possibly for the new Alfa! But, you'd be foolish not to give the C63 a good look if you're in the market for this type of car.

Cheers for that.
Yeah, a C63 Estate does keep calling out to me!!

I am getting older and sensible, I have a project I want to take on with my commercial property which has needed me to scale back my outgoings to guarantee the funding to do it, but when it is finished I will be trying one.

After 3 months of waiting it has finally arrived!

A 300 GEL petrol of 1994 vintage. It has only done 38K kilometres would you believe and there is some Japanese paperwork that supports this. Underneath it's like new.

It's certainly very different my Range Rover, reminds me of the Landcruiser in many respects.

But what a machine! Very, very basic, but beautifully functional just like my E36.

It comes with the most amazing seat covers that put modern Artico to shame. The cloth seats underneath are like new though.

It needs a professional valet and polish and a new steering wheel I think.

At the moment it is shod with winter tyres (new Bridgestone Blizzaks) so I'm also on the look out for a set of MB wheels to put some summer tyres on.

Would look great on a set of Ashtaroth wheels; the current wheels are a bit at odds with the newer lights / grills / wing mirrors. Enjoy!

That's fantastic. I really like the G-wagon, despite being a 4x4 sceptic I would love to run one. Is it like other old mercs in terms of build quality?

It is built like the proverbial brick outhouse. No rust on it all.

Doors all shut with a thud, bonnet weighs a ton, all the panels seem to be made of much thicker metal than normal.

Switches all work as well as they did on day 1 I expect.

Brake pedal sits a bit high in relation to the accelerator pedal so you need to lift your foot more than usual. Accelerator needs a good prod to overcome the spring (like my E36) but you get used to it.
Visibility very good, easy to judge size.

Not been far in it yet but I love the honesty, functionality and simplicity of design.

I suspect it likes a drink and parts are villainously expensive, but hey, who cares ! I do very few miles these days.

I can report it has the worlds cheapest sun-visors though.

My G500 made all the other Mercs I've owned and currently own feel flimsy.

Its not, previous owner (aerodynamics engineer for an F1 team) had the AMG kit, wheels & 'V6 turbo' wing badges added when he bought it from new.

Ah ok, as you were.

I couldn't quite see the wing badge but assumed it said V8 Kompressor. Also never seen those wheels on an E-Class before, they're the same as I have on my C63.

Yes, with tyres they were about a £4k extra, not seen another like it. Initially I wasn't that sure about the 'V6 turbo' on the wings but again, fitted by the dealer from new & ive not seen another with it so quite happy.
