I have one of the two Sultan of Brunei cars which I have decided to keep .We are upgrading the brakes--334/300 Silver Arrows- the suspension Bilstein B6 sports plus Eibach lowering springs- topped off with a complete kmac camber adjustment kit.
All this will be set up by Chris Franklin at Center Gravity who we have used for our Porsche RS and who we think is the Master of suspension tuning
However the seats are, in effect 18 years old , and my question is----has anyone ever upgraded their R129 SL seats-and if so what were they from ???
We have a C43 here and the seats are perfect . But trying to find secondhand C43 seats is proving difficult !!
All information gratefully received

Luke.

Upgrading R129 seats must be difficult owing to the integrated seatbelt unit ; I havn't seen any with aftermarket seats . German ebay has been a useful source of rare C36 parts over the years , so may prove helpful for your C43 seats .
I've seen your SL60 advertised in the past ; it seems hideously expensive compared to similar offerings from other reputable classic Mercedes dealers , despite it's middle eastern origins (!)

It is totally uprated by AMG for the Sultan from a standard SL 60 AMG--it cost £154000 in December 1992

He had two made and has kept the other
This one was purchased by a well known Cheshire Dealer in 2002 with only 85 kilometres on the clock
So thats why it is dearer than a bog standard car

Thanks Luke for your post
We are driving the C43-- didnt realise how good they are.
Ironically got approached by a Boxster driver at Rothwell services after I blew him away at the A14/M6 roundabout ! He wanted to know all about it-no badging !!

Why not simply replace the sprung base and cushion? This should be relatively straight forward.

As for the backrest, that is a different matter. Even when new they do not offer much lumbar support. You could retrofit the orthopaedic backrest: there is a procedure for this on WIS but it will be expensive, about £2,000 for one side then another £1,000 for the other. I use a Mercedes-Benz lumbar support cushion which I thought would be an expensive gimmick but is very good.

If I recall correctly, one of the main downsides of your car is that it lacks heated seats, am I right? So what did justify the extra £50k over list?

I ought to add that my seats are 200,000miles old but remain firm and well-sprung, although I am not a fatty.

Sorry been away all day
Hasnt got heated seats-you are correct
Cannot see why there was such a price difference
However the colour is special Kobalt Blue Metallic
The interior is non standard with the Sultan 's insignia -in Kingfisher Blue
The body-kit is different from standard
The wheels were 8x17 10x17 very wide deep dish-actually very ugly IMHO
Engine uprated but how I have no idea
A very attractive car which draws attention everywhere it is parked-
And of course it is ferociously fast--Phil Crouch loved it !!

Love the model, but not the appearance of this car paperbag

Much prefer sleeper look, and the wheel on the better side for most of my driving
