It's surprising people still joining to be honest with the problems they are having

That's true, have you seen what's happening on AO eek
It's falling apart at the seams, but the reasons are there for all to see, the owners and moderators need to be ashamed of the situation really.
The combination of a new owner who doesn't want to listen, and pitiful moderation skills is killing the place frown

it is still a valuable resource though which should be cherished. However it is a shadow of its former self these days which is a great shame. frown

And in the shadow of power hungry mods who, when taken to task by its members try and portray themselves all 'nicey nicey' and understanding.
All very transparent though, it won't be long before they flex their virtual muscles again.
The place needs a few resignations to truly sort out the trouble.

Most of the people complaining about moderation are on about one specific thing: posts in the For Sale/Wanted threads being removed. The same thing happens here with YouTube threads etc - them's the rules. I don't care either way but it's hardly worth quitting the site over.

The owners' lack of interest and technical failings are another matter, and something of a real problem.

For clarity: I'm not and never have been a moderator.

Who'd admit to being a mod on AO ?
A bit of a dirty secret for most I'd say

It's far worse than that. When I joined in 2003 it was a technical forum that was complimented by a friendly and open off topic forum. The Mods were well informed, and used their own discretion to good effect.

Now, however, it's lost its core technical emphasis and is ruled by the WOT clowns and Mods who don't understand what they're moderating when it comes to the tech lounges. Then they dish out punative measures with a precious and high handed attitude.

They're driving the tech heads away from the forum without realising that they're the ones who built it and are the reason why it continues to function, for the time being at least.

I've been there since 2010, so I can't comment on before then. The technical and administrative aspects outside moderation are worse than when I joined, although it took about a year to get my welcome pack when I first registered, so plus ca change and all that. The moderation is little different, IMO.

WOT is a horrible creation like some sort of grownup Bebo, but we don't have to look at it.

Most (not all) people complaining about the moderation have an agenda - involvement with another website, previous fallings out or flounces, etc.

I can still get pretty much any question about my 156 answered, and it's still pretty much the only place (and marque, in my limited experience) where that's true.

There is no consistency to the moderating on AO.Depends who you are with what you can get away with.
Some of the "green" staff have a shocking attitude.Just an example in the events section an event a member was asking about and interested in overlapped with an"official" event a regional rep was helping organising.
The way "green" handled this was so over the top flippant and dismissive if not downright disrespectful.
As it has been said before nothing will change unless certain people are either moved or resignations take place.
Bigfoot seems to be where the other mods should be looking for a lesson in moderation.

Sounds a real shame. I joined in 2002 and met a lot of good people on there. It started changing dramatically a few years ago when there was a move to make it a club rather than a forum. I hope it all settles down. As mentioned above it really is a good technical resource, but if that's getting overtaken by all the rubbish it will not survive.

In relation to the forum as a resource, it's still unparalleled and this alone will ensure survival.

I can't see currently paid up "members" rejoining though but given the ads & sponsorship, I doubt this matters.

I've said what I've said as an ex-moderator who instigated resignation due to the less is more moderation mantra going out of the window.

I have no axe to grind, I'm still an active user but I simply think it's needlessly over & inconsistently policed at the moment. I'm not the only ex-staff member to say this either.
