I've noticed that in low speed traffic a lot of engine noise, which sounds like the engine is running rough with a lot of vibration. It happens sporadically after periods of sitting in traffic on longer runs. What is it? Its done 70k miles - no timing belt change as yet. Is this the likely culprit?

don't think its your timing belt, they don't make noise just snap when worn.
more likely front wheel bearings.

Probably not the timing belt, but it is due for a change anyhow.

A few weeks back, a relatives Berlingo's belt snapped at 75k mulching the engine. She was travelling at 40mph.

The car had to be scrapped as it was not economical to repair....the car otherwise was in good condition, and could have gone on for another few years I'm sure.

The cooling fan on my old Punto made the most God-awful noise when it was running. It worked ok but was just plain embarrassing. It vibrated too because the bearings were shot so it sounded and felt like the car was knackered.

Worth a look.

Timing belt won't trash the engine if it snaps anyway so you're safe there. Anyway I would expect it to be a constant noise, being affected by revs.

As above, cooling fan or part of the system would be worth a look first

My Abarth 500 does this, its the car cooling itself down. I dont think its anything to worry about.
