MAC, if it's only the fuel economy that's drawing you towards the diesel, you might want to consider the 2.2 petrol engine.

It's not the fastest thing on the road, but will get you 30MPG easily... which isn't much less than the diesel it appears.

They also seem to be somewhat easier to find.

There are ten Alfa Spider 2.4 diesels under £9k on AutoTrader at the moment, so they're not THAT hard to find

I have a 1.9 GT diesel and I agree its pretty agricultural, especially when cold. However, its pretty quiet from inside and I only use it for commuting (I have a five pot turbo for fun, with three times the power of the GT...)

However, I keep finding myself drawn to the 2.4 diesels - they are a great engine. The problem for me is the fuel consumption - I regularly get over 50mpg out of the GT (average across the whole tank), but I read regular reports of the 2.4 Brera and 159 getting mid-30s. I used to work with someone that struggled to get into the 30s in her diesel Spider (although to be fair, she was doing about three miles a day in it) - she looked good in it though wink

If I felt like I could accept mid 30s mpg, I'd have a Merc CLS
