I'm about to buy an integrale and wanted to pick some brains!

But where do all the integrale experts hang out? There doesn't seem to be much activity on here, and I can't see any obvious other forums - is there anywhere, or are there just not many owners around?

So far I've had a read of the Evo buyers guide, plus spoken to a couple of specialists, but I'd be keen to hear from some owners...

thanks in advance for any help

I would not say I am an expert but being an owner I am sure I might be able to answer some questions you may have. Feel free to get in touch.

thanks all. no specific questions at this stage - but I just wanted to understand what areas I should look out for when buying a car. As it turns out, I'm almost certainly buying a cheap 8v car, and I'll get it put into a specialist for a good check-over and see what they say. I'm buying the car in Northern Ireland so will need to drive it back to the mainland before getting it checked, so it's a bit risky.

I've read a few buying guides but if anybody has any ideas on what to look for that might be a deal breaker, please let me know!! smile

This. And rust.
I bought mine from NI and drove it back home via Southern IRELAND. Make sure you pay the toll for the motorway in SI when you get home or else face a fine once the car is registered.
Mechanically wise, if it has an MOT from NI, it should be better than here as the standard over there is higher than over here. You even get a nice proper certificate, not just a piece of laser printed A4 like over here.
As above for help, lots of people on Lancia Sport or Evocorner although as with any internet forum, be prepared to take some comments with a pinch of salt.
Good luck. Buy a good un and it'll be the coolest thing you've ever done.

Even the best looked after cars will have either current or pending rust issues. Mine lives in a dehumidified garage, wants for nothing and regularly checked on a ramp. Yet it was only when we removed the steering rack for reconditioning that we discovered rust inside the front wings. It's no big deal: everything can be solved. Just accept regular inspections and pre-emptive treatment are part of ownership.

That isn't true, there are some genuine rust free examples around, granted a cheap 8v won't be one of them though!

I really don't believe there is any such thing. The youngest of these cars are 20 years old. One can always find a minute spot of paint bubble if one looks hard enough in the most obscure places.

And to be pedantic, I did say "or pending". smile

Hi. I'm in Northern Ireland and I've owned 7 Grale's, built 3 of them and currently building an Evo 2 at the moment. If the car is local to me I'm happy to have a look at it for you (might actually even know the car). Feel free to PM me.

Some parts are hard to get now like lights and dampers and for that are expensive. Bodywork is easily sorted by the right person.

Thanks for all of the comments - this is all really helpful.

Given the car's ability to turn into a pile of iron oxide, and especially with it being based in Northern Ireland (not exactly known for it's desert climate), I had a bodywork expert give it the once over. Apaer from very minor bubbling in 3 places (bottom of doors, and rear C pillar) - but all just surface rust - the car appears solid. It has a bit of filler around one of the back arches, but otherwise solid.

the car paintwork is a bit tired, and inside it's all a bit scruffy - but mostly I think it just needs a bit of TLC - I wonder what a decent T cut and polish would do, for example!

I test drove the car this weekend and it all feels solid - it's had plenty of work on brakes, suspension bushes (although all done by a mechanic friend so no receipts). The guy selling it seemed quite genuine, too.

So, all in all, I think i'm going to go for it.

Once I get it back, I think I'll drop it off at Zagato Lancia (near Regents Park), and they've agreed to give it a full check and let me know what work it needs...

Exciting times!!!

Hmmmm..... I`d think again about putting it to Zagato. Autointegrale in Reading would be a far better bet.

I've heard that, although bad reports have been 3rd or 4th hand.

oh ok - that's interesting. I've done a quick web search and there does seem to be a general negative vibe about Zagato - I'll maybe think about the other suggestion over near Reading then...

For sure one mans 'Rust free' is anothers rotbox and most don't get them up in the air to view the important bits. I would agree with your reticence to believe anyone's claims without seeing it in the flesh and above my head as is my usual view. I did have a genuine rust free one though, came from Japan and didn't look like it had seen any water in its life - it still had the factory applied dusting of matt black on the suspension components, that isn't something I've seen in years.

When I'd finished rustproofing it I bet you would have seen 10+ yrs as a daily drive in the UK before seeing any rust on top, used on sunny days only it would have lasted forever it really was that good. In my heart I didn't want to let it go, but my business head said otherwise!
