Son has set his heart on one (looks alone). So he now needs to find out as much info as he can on them. He's never had an Alfa before but mentioned someone had said the gearbox takes a bit of getting use to and the Diesel engine was the preferred choice for reliability?

He's 23 and will be looking to spend between 7k and 8k on the right car (when he finds out what the best model is) probably buying after June unless a good one comes up, any help much appreciated

Why sort of mileage is he doing as that would probably be a factor. If he can push his budget up to about 9k he could start looking at the Prodrive version although it will be the 2.2 petrol version. The 3.2 is obviously better sounding and reported to be more reliable but higher road tax etc to consider. From the forums however there doesn't appear to be a massive difference between the two regarding MPG.

Main thing is to go and drive one and se if he likes it, they are definitely a heart over head purchase but a great choice for a 23 year old.

The search can be as fun as ownership - at least I think so. Also a lot cheaper. wink
Being put off by horror stories is normal but thanks to the internet, there is dirt to be found on each and every car out there.

Forums and the Internet will throw up horror stories about basically every manufacturer out there, even the likes of BMW, Audi and Mercedes. Forums will always highlight the bad points of a car, that's just the nature of forums but for every bad story, there will be tenfold the number of happy experiences.

Since the dawn of the net and forums every car I have bought has documented problems but ultimately you do your homework and find a good Indy garage, then let your heart guide you and have no regrets. One day he will take the plunge.
