Hey guys,

after looking for a newer car and being fed up from the amount of money im looking to lose over the years, Ive decided to look for an older classic and enjoy the driving and maintenance route rather than the no frills.

Ive seen a couple of 2000 1973/4 2000 Alfa coupes which need some work but i really like the look of them and id be using it every day for work. What would be big things or things i could do to it to make it more useable as an every day?

im looking at a few around 5-6k with shipping costs and then bringing them back to the UK and get it registered. But it looks and sounds like the perfect car for me.

Let me know what experience you guys have with these.

On your budget you are very unlikely to find a decent example and as with all old classics, bodywork, rust, etc is the major issue.

re usability, I run one of these and using it in summer is no problem but the demisting etc is pretty poor so winter use would not be recommended for that reason alone never mind salt quickly eroding your pride and joy.!

I have a 1973 GTV with the 1750 engine, but only use it as a fair weather car in the summer. One of my friends has a 2000 GTV which he bought 3 years ago, and which was in much better condition than mine. He uses his all year round, although it is garaged at night. Over three years his car has really suffered - it now has loads of rust patches (holes in both doors) - and really needs a lot of money spending.

I would be surprised if you could find a good reliable car anywhere in Europe at the sort of budget you quoted. One of these can be a very enjoyable car - it's a great driving experience, but I wouldn't view it as a daily driver.
