Warning to anyone looking at the estate version with a towbar.
Firstly they have to upgrade to 18" wheels, which jacks up the price. Then that pushes the car into the next CO2 emissions category which means car tax increases. Then because it only does 19 miles on a charge it doesn't qualify for the £2,500.00 government subsidy. The limit is 20 miles!

Buy without towbar and dealer fit afterwards confused

Why would that be necessary?

No one can explain why the wheel diameter needs to increase. One dealer said for increased ride height, another said it was to do with gearing!?!
The lease company is investigating retro fitting a tow bar.
The dealers seem to be very poorly informed. It's taken weeks to get to this point. Not one of them knew about the affects of adding these options.

I was quoted 2500 for retrofit towbar! and told much cheaper from the factory.

Yes bigger wheels seem to change the fictional CO2 number to a larger fictional CO2 number and hence tax.

Good news though is when the car arrives an indicator of what to expect is my daily commute to central London of 50 miles roundtrip normally manages around 38-40 miles on electric so something comfortably in excess of 99.9 mpg.

Useless MB dealers, as ever! As the circumference has to say about the same, then so would the gearing and ride height.

Found this - the pdf was slow to download but left it a couple of mins and it worked. I haven't read the whole thread for obvious reasons.

If you get an estate with Premium Plus you also have to have the 18" rims.
I believe it's to do with the weight of the glass roof.
I don't think you do with a saloon.

Chap on the MB Club forum has retro fitted a tow bar.

Get a 330e.

You can have the wheels you want (19") and a towbar and it's still 49g CO2 so 7% BIK.

I almost got the 350e but when I realised I could only have the tiny alloys and stay under 49g I got the 330e instead.

When I looked the BMW didn't have a towbar option available.
No estate either. Big choice of wheels though!

The Op is mentioning 19 miles electric range but Supermono is talking about 40 miles on a charge. Which is it?

19 I believe is the official figure.
Less in reality like all such figures!

Realistic range is 16 miles based on 5 months ownership.

I need an estate so BMW is out. Looks like either retro fit tow bar or an Outlander. But I'd love to know why 18" wheels are needed?

Its the extra rolling resistance that causes the c02 to move up a bracket.

Mercedes have fitted the lightest wheels at that size to keep the emissions in the bracket. The potential extra load means stronger wheels. Its just safety. Just shows how close the c350e is to being out the bracket.

As above v60 d5 twin engine, with 19" wheels is still under, you can also fit a tow bar to any of the range, regardless of wheels.

Is that the official response from Merc?

I would agree. Ties up with needing the bigger wheels with the glass roof on the estate.
It's a heavy beast. Lovely car though, but I agree it's frustrating other manufacturers are obviously a bit ahead of the game on the CO2 figures.
