And what to look for when going to see one? I understand they are reasonably entertaining to drive whilst having the advantage of 3 rear seats, which few of its rivals seem to have (bearing in mind Golf has rubbish engine choices below the GTi) and most other things are dull to drive.

I have a 1.9. Fun to drive. Awful car though. If you really have to get one, stay away from the diesels.

Why do you say that?

Ive had some experience with the 130hp 1.9 diesel, and that was quite an event, looooads of torque. And its just the alfa JTD lump, which is considered a good engine.

SWMBO has had a T-Jet Grande Punto for the last six years. It's pretty punchy up to about 70-80. After that, it does off as the turbo is minuscule. It handles neatly and has been pretty reliable (couple of electrical issues at the rear of the car due to a dodgy earth and some broken wires to the tailgate). Now available from a couple of grand

In Abarth form, its 180bhp and not hugely difficult to get to 200+ - properly entertaining. You should get one within your budget.

The diesel is a superb lump, but not at all sporty. 130bhp as standard and easy to get to 160bhp without major expense. Due to the torque figures, it would probably be almost as quick as the Abarth in everyday circumstances, as well as significantly cheaper to run.

I have the 130hp. No complaints about the engine, the torque is lovely.

Unfortunately the gearbox is made of cheese, and is one of many things that has failed on mine. The smaller engines are more reliable.

Maybe you will have more luck than me!
