I'm looking at swapping my Audi for something a bit different.

I've been considering a 2 litre diesel Alfa Romeo Giulietta. I can pick one up for under 6 grand in decent condition with under 80k on clock.

I am yet to test drive one, but have read all the reviews and they do seem to have a few minor faults, such as the bad placement of the speedometer, lack of foot space in drivers footwell.

I do under 10k a year mileage, but everyone else seems to drive around in diesels without too many issues. If I give it a blast down motorway every few weeks it should be ok.

Looking forward to hearing your opinions.

Audi A3 1.8 TFSI, or Alfa Romeo Giulietta 2.0 diesel.

Alfa's diesel lumps are pretty good AFAIK, so engine wise that is you sorted. Handling wise the reviews all praised the giulietta as one of the best FWD cars out there, so it should be a good step up from an A3.

Id go for it (but possibly consider a petrol engine for that mileage)

They do a 1.4 turbo petrol, but according to figures it has worse fuel consumption than my Audi, with less horse power.

Could be, ive had the same 1.4 in two guises in two mitos, both did 9L/100km, but at least part of that was down to my right foot.

Are you going by factory numbers or real world averages though? I tend to use spritmonitor.de for my mileage estimates when looking at a car, so far my 147 has beaten the german average quite decently, so im happy.

I'm going by factory figures. My Audi suppose to do 42mpg, it does 30mpg real world. The 1.4 Alfa suppose to do 36mpg, real world who knows.

Should be roughly similar, apparently the 170hp is slightly more economical then the 120 and 150hp models (probably down to gearbox, i suspect the 170 is a 6 speed, the 120 probably a 5)

I have a 170bhp 1.4 MultiAir - not a fan of diesels. IMO it's a very good engine. Doesn't really thrive on revs like old-school Italian engines, but it's punchy with lots of low-down torque, feels a lot bigger than 1.4 litres. Does 38.5mpg in mixed use, have seen 40mpg on mostly motorway driving. Don't know where the 'poor speedo position' complaint comes from - looks perfectly ok to me. Initially I missed a footrest for the clutch foot but can't say it bothers me now. I like it & would happily buy another. I wouldn't choose anything based on factory fuel consumption figures, but I'm sure a diesel will always give more mpg. I'd still have the petrol engine personally.

Try and get a "Sportiva" as they look a lot nicer than the standard spec. I'd recommend a petrol too.

I have a 170PS 1.4 as a station car and its a lot of fun - handles really well and is a nice engine. I would heartily recommend one. Haven't driven an audi so can't say if a step up or down but i've been very happy with mine.

On a separate note... does anyone have any experience tuning / chipping the 170PS 1.4TB? i've seen a bunch of ads for it and have never chipped a car before but would be quite partial to trying it. Any suggestions welcome.

I have the same car for everyday use. Get about 37 mpg on average so must be well over 40 for motorway use if cruising not too fast.

Only John Lewis seem to make booster seats that fit.

Gear knob cover is fragile. Bit off topic but does anyone know where you can get a better gear level knob?
